Thirty-three-year-old Brit Margaret ("Maggie") Walsh is going through a "bad patch": she's drunk her contact lenses for "the third time in six weeks"; she's lost her job; and her nine-year marriage to Garv is over. Thus begins Keyes's enormously entertaining fifth novel. She resurrects the "maintenance-level dysfunctional" Walsh family: sisters Claire (Watermelon), Rachel (Rachel's Holiday), Helen and Anna, plus a befuddled dad and hyper-as-a-hummingbird mum. Maggie, however, is the "good" sister, so it is especially shameful when she must slink back home. She tends to the "mourning sickness" over her failed marriage, which Keyes describes with surprising depth and verisimilitude, and begins fantasizing about what might have been with her first love, Shay Delaney. Accepting an invitation from her best friend, Emily, a struggling screenwriter, Maggie visits L.A., the mecca of reinvention. She decides to trade in her "plain yogurt" persona for that of bad girl and takes an oft-bumpy walk on the wild side, with results that are riotously and embarrassingly silly. Amid her drunken nights and poor flirting choices, she throws herself into the glittering cesspool of La-la-land: acting as Emily's assistant, she witnesses the superficial frivolity and vicious fickleness of the entertainment business. Keyes's observations may be familiar (on aura reading, fake boobs, sadistic eyebrow groomers, the dependence of social status on cars), but her cleverly hilarious approach, especially as a foreigner, keep them fresh. Although this is unquestionably a fun read, Keyes refrains from turning it into fluff and delivers a well-rounded story. Her themes of love and redemption coupled with her familiar, best-friend tone have made her wildly popular in the U.K. and, like her latest novel, should ensure her a Hollywood ending in the U.S. as well.

It's not hard to figure out why Irish author Keyes' books (most recently, Last Chance Saloon [BKL Je 1 & 15 01]) are best-sellers: she imbues her charming stories about flawed yet feisty women with incredible warmth and wit. This is her first novel to be set in America, and she does a wicked turn on L.A.--the land of complicated martinis and trendy restaurants ("long, hot looks were being exchanged over blueberry pancakes, and that was just the waiters"). Dubliner Margaret Walsh is devastated over the breakup of her marriage ("It's sadder than the hungry babies in Angela's Ashes. It's sadder than Mary going blind on Little House on the Prairie"). She decides to visit her best friend, Emily, a struggling screenwriter living in L.A. Although she fears that mending her heart will involve going out with a gang of girls and dancing to "I Will Survive," she is soon accompanying Emily to pitches at studios around town, beautifying herself (for a small fortune) at various salons, and engaging in romantic dalliances. A four star book, but could have been better

ANGELS by Marian Keyes
A young woman finds that her marriage was not all that she thought it was, in ANGELS, a novel by Irish author Marian Keyes. Maggie Walsh (Garvan) was a happily married woman, married to Paul Garvan for many years, when she suddenly realizes that they weren't really as happy as she thought. The opening line explains that she has just left her husband, and in flashbacks she tells the story of her marriage to Paul (or Garv, as she calls him). Told in a somewhat sarcastic/light hearted tone of voice, Maggie goes over the events that led to the ultimate low point of their marriage, and why she finally decided to leave him, at least for now.
Maggie, who is usually conservative by nature, at least compared to her crazy sisters, shocks everyone by announcing she is going to Los Angeles to live there for a month with one of her best friends, Emily. She leaves her husband, family and friends in Ireland, and makes that big trip to California.
Maggie's stay in Southern California is one of the craziest times of her life. She parties, she meets new men, she lies out on the beach, and she slowly forgets about Garv, sort of. In the mean time, she finds out how much fun she can have while being single, but it doesn't last.
In the mean time, Emily is working on that very important movie script, and it's her last chance at a life in Hollywood. The antics and schemes that they go through to get this script bought are almost as hysterical as an "I Love Lucy" show. And when Maggie's family decides to take advantage of the situation and come down to Southern California for an impromptu vacation, things really get funny.
ANGELS is my introduction to the writing of Marian Keyes, and I have heard a lot of positive things about her. Unfortunately, ANGELS is probably not one of her best works, as so many of these same people have told me. My main gripe with the book is that although the story was entertaining and funny, I found that it went on and on, and sometimes i felt it wasn't going anywhere. I think this book could have been cut short a bit, but overall, it was an enjoyable fluff read. I don't recommend ANGELS as an introductory book to the world of Marian Keyes, but it is a fun book nonetheless.

Outlasts Milk

Rita Rudner is quoted as having said "In Hollywood a marriage is a success if it outlasts milk."
Maggie Walsh is known to her family and friends as plain vanilla yogurt. At room temperature, no less. Of the five Walsh sisters she is the only well-behaved one (as far as people know). Having married her first boyfriend and landed a paralegal job that was "as glamorous as a cold sore," she is known to be the steady, dull one. So it comes as a great shock when she leaves her husband of nine years, loses her job, and takes off from Ireland for Los Angeles to stay with her screenwriter friend Emily. It isn't long before she discovers that culture shock is the least of her problems in the land of dissolving marriages, movie extras, plastic surgery, and casual sex.
Angels is a book full of joy and sadness, artistry and humor. There is a story underneath a story underneath a story here, and Marian Keyes works simultaneously both forward and backward from the break-up to lead the reader to the story's surprising conclusion. I read it, laughing out loud in parts, and thoroughly enjoyed what I thought was a well-written light read. But the last third of the book sandbagged me with its unexpected depths. By the end it becomes clear that if Maggie Walsh is vanilla yogurt, it is yogurt with raspberries buried underneath the surface. One last thought: this book must have been fun to write, because it sure was a blast to read. Definitely worth 5 s tars.

Another Walsh breaks free to sow her wild oats

Yep, Marian Keyes is back with her third novel of the wonderfully semi-function Irish family - the Walshes. In Angels, the steady Walsh daughter, Maggie, breaks free of her marriage, travels to Los Angeles and proceeds to try to dredge up the Wild Girl she always thought she was.
Keyes doesn't disappoint with this story - once again their is great good humour, underlined with the truth which is slowly drawn out during the story as Maggie realises just what has been going on her life - and we realise that her steady life wasn't quite what it seemed at the beginning.
I love these Walsh stories - well just about anything by Keyes anyway. There are always depths to her stories and her characters which when revealed explain a lot more about the characters and motivations and slowly draw us deeper into the emotional world they inhabit.
Maggie has been married for nine years when her husband Paul (who everyone calls Garv) starts having an affair. So Maggie slinks home to Dublin, and then off to Los Angeles to be with her best friend, Emily - who is struggling to write a script and sell it in LA. The nuttiness of the LA movie-making scene is interspersed with some really down to earth characters - and lessons in life which don't whack you in the face.
Lovely and readable story - Keyes has to be one of my favourite authors and a must read.

Seidl (Early Spring) transcends wrangling about the reality of climate change by focusing on those already adapting to shifts in temperature: flora, fauna, and farmers. In less than a decade, mizuma plants in California evolved to the shortened growing season caused by extreme drought. Yukon red squirrels are giving birth more than two weeks earlier to take advantage of global warming-induced increases in spruce cone crops. Vermont winegrowers "alert to the changes in regional weather and climate" are establishing new grape stock for resilience. Geese, salmon, and eels are even abandoning migration when easier winters make staying more advantageous than travel. But some species are less flexible, needing human assistance to relocate, and human migrations are increasing in response to drought and flooding. So just what do you know about Global Warming?

I bought this book for a reading program and the very first reader, used it in a program for about 25 women. She really found it very helpful and those of us who were at the program were much informed by the time the presentation was over. The book arrived in primo condition.

Nice book, with 2 major problems.

I am reading a copy from my local public library (C)2011.

Ms Seidl evidently doesn't understand the difference between
(kilo, mega,tera) watts (POWER units) and
(kilo, mega,tera) watt-hours (ENERGY UNITS).

Also the book has no index.

A second edition is needed to correct these issues.

Too little too late

She is the typical tree-hugger we all remember from the 70's, straight from the idyllic Vermont countryside in her totally green cabin, growing her own food, generating her own power, rhapsodizing over every adaption the little critters in her world have made, and happy about her choices even while considering the overwhelming changes that will occur on this planet over the next century. I suppose I should give credit to people like her, but I can't help but think those folks will regret their pledge to shelter refugees from ecologically devastated areas. Vermont in a hundred years will probably be one big shantytown with everyone picking through huge garbage piles and killing each other over squatting rights. This book isn't a 'how to', but a 'why we should', and she does give some interesting info for those who 'want to'. But the pessimist in me says 'why bother anymore'.

Most of the book is rehashed history or recommendations to read other books.

The techniques are fairly simplistic and has a monotheistic perspective that runs through the whole book. Do druids really think they get their power from the Christian god the book seems to imply it is so. Interesting outlook.

The things crafted in the book don't really seem to have practical workable methods. You make a magic ring for instance by finding bits of gold and silver and making a mold and melting it down. Not a lot of information on various sigils or designs or rituals to make the ring empowered.

Overall I would rate this bleah.

The part on runes was sketchy and had very little knowledge or practical exercises. Eldred's books were far superior.

The book provides a lot of historical information, defiantly don't do justice to their website, which gives a lot more info on the subjects.
the book itself is very basic, and i would recommend it to people who are just getting into the subject of magic and want to understand the core basics; however, if you have prior experience in the craft, you will find this book not to be anything special; one good thing about it that it teaches some methods of "generating mana" by meditating, something that other authors on the subject don't really focus on.

Worthwhile reading

I was really blown away by the techniques and strategies described in the book to determine if someone is lying to you. This book is useful for any situation - not just the dating game. If you're interested in learning more about how to read people at home, at the office, and in the dating scene, then pick up this book.

It's simply great in a much useful way for women

When I began reading this book I had so many flashbacks and images and words popping of the men I have met, dated, known or interacted with one way or another. Women are not well educated I should say the majority are not well educated to question the behaviors of men if anything they are socially brainwashed and conditioned to do the oppposite so they can have a "mate" to settle for less so they do not have to be lonely. Mothers ignore the plea of their daughters for their husbands and their sons's sake to glorify what would later be the weaknessess and downfall of women who are supposed to be at a mature age to face the world.

You can then understand the depth of selfishness that affect everything that occurs in the world. I do not mean to go off topic nonetheless everything is so intrinsically related that it's important to understand the selfish motives of men and the women who support them and I know those women and in some ways unconscious or not I have contributed to that myself and I am aiming to no longer do so. Read this book before you go out 100% and read it again so it can sink in your subconscious until it becomes so automatic that you are like a superwoman when you go out and meet fools for whether or not you want to you will meet dangerous fools and you must know how to protect your mind from their poisons and tricks, avoid them if not defend yourself from them to disentangle yourself from them and their madness.

I would recommand this book over and over and it's in my bag as I write this. Thanks to the author I know now how intuitive I am I just never knew how to defend myself due to mental conditioning from childhood that makes you put yourself last and every one else first while they trample on you over and over. This is the story of an old snake who has shed her old skins to be transformed to fly somewhere with the wind.

Awesome Book!

This book was much better than I expected. Other books about lying and body language just brag about how great the author is and tell stories about how they interrogated people. This is the first book on the topic that actually provides real strategies that I can use to know with confidence when someone is lying to me.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know when you're being lied to.

This book is invaluable to me. I needed a crash course on understanding my role as hygienist cleaning implants. This was well illustrated and very helpful. Highly recommend this book.

Needs a copy editor

I am a periodontist and I wanted to learn how hygienists are trained to examine and clean implants. There is some good information for hygienists, including clinical tips and some literature references. This book is written by a hygienist and geared toward hygienists, and it won't have the same level of detail or sophistication as one geared for dentists, especially specialists. For general dentists and specialists I would definitely recommend Stuart Froum's Dental Implant Complications over this textbook.

I have not finished reading this book yet, but I have already come across at least three typos. One identified a periodontal textbook, Periodontics: Medicine, Surgery and Implants as Prosthodontics: Medicine, Surgery and Implants. Little errors and typos are all over this book.

Great Choice for a Teachers' Study Group

With its beguiling title, NEVER WORK HARDER THAN YOUR STUDENTS & OTHER PRINCIPLES OF GREAT TEACHING will certainly attract the eye. The good news? The book is a lot more than just a catchy title. It's a well-grounded argument for seven principles teachers should all adopt to help their students learn. It also draws pieces from a lot of the disparate research we've seen in other tomes: Marzano's and Wiggins', to name two of the more well known. Yet much of it remains her own, and her voice is both confident and distinct.

Robyn Jackson breaks her book down into seven principles that -- with time, patience, and practice -- can make any teacher a master teacher (she contends they are made, not born, thank God). They are:

1. Start Where Your Students Are
2. Know Where Your Students Are Going
3. Expect to Get Your Students There
4. Support Your Students
5. Use Effective Feedback
6. Focus on Quality, Not Quantity
7. Never Work Harder Than Your Students

As you can see, Jackson saves the best for last. Still, among these seemingly obvious principles, there's more than just a little controversy. What I liked best was how Jackson relates her experiences presenting this very material at professional development sessions. Better yet, she shares anecdotes of some of her toughest audiences (e.g. veteran high school teachers) who met her presentation with rolling eyes, crossed arms, and at times open derision. Jackson turned off her overhead and politely went toe-to-toe with them by opening the floor to their objections and concerns. The transcript is eye-opening, and there's more than one instance of such Doubting Thomas Moments included in the text.

Yes, this book is of equal value to both rank rookie and seasoned veteran, and yes, it will make even seasoned veterans reconsider some of their most cherished habits. If you're not up for that, then why are you reading this review? To my mind, any teacher willing to read books on teaching is a teacher on a mission. This book will help that mission, I promise. Theory, pragmatic ideas, and even naysayers' doubts. It's all here. Recommendation: buy, share, and discuss with a fellow teacher (or, better yet, a fellow teaching staff).

I wish it were required reading for my entire school

I'm a 7th grade Social Studies teacher (with 16 years of HS and MS experience) and curriculum geek who was intrigued by the title. However, that is only one of seven principles of "master teaching" delineated in the book. Several times I found myself facing ideas that I've been resistant to in the past, but Jackson makes a compelling case for each of the principles and the steps to incorporate them into classroom practice. Her focus is consistently on student achievement in humanizing, empowering ways for students, teachers, and (to a much lesser extent) parents. The book is not touchy-feely (one segment describes dealing with the "brutal facts" of some of the constraints we face), but quite practically inspirational. In truth, "Never Work Harder..." verbalized a lot of what I've been looking for to guide my teaching in the future. I've differentiated, used multiple intelligences, incorporated RTI, along with many other strategies and protocols - this book helps me see the big picture that brings these together in a much more effective way.

A Worthy Book to Consider

I'll be honest here--I am not a good teacher.

The longer I teach, the more that I think this is true. It's not that I don't try or don't care. Instead, I think that I am not effective. Entertaining, perhaps, but not effective. Every once in a while, I'll read a book on how to be a better English teacher, and these books make me feel worse about my chosen career. Teaching books work opposite as teaching movies do. After I watch Dead Poets Society or Freedom Writers, I feel invigorated to go back into the classroom to kick some pedagogical booty. Reading teaching books by those who are master teachers makes me feel like I am pedagogical booty. See the difference?

Knowing that most of you reading this are not teachers, I won't bore you with Robyn Jackson's methods in detail. Her main thrust is that becoming a master teacher is something that can be attained with seven principals ("Use Effective Feedback" and "Start Where Your Students Are" are two of the seven). Jackson takes teachers through the changing of a teaching mindset, rather than merely adding activities or procedures to our already overflowing toolbox. Her focus is pairing down our classrooms and activities to only essential ones and do those well. I liked this idea, and it can help me. I have noticed that at times, I'm seeking ways to fill a class with interesting activities, but they may not go where I want them to in meeting core objectives in reading and writing. I have already started to think more about why I do the things I do in class, and I have contemplated places to trim the fat.

Jackson also encourages ways to support students, and I need improvement in this area. I liked her idea of not letting kids off the hook by simply giving them a zero for a missing assignment. Instead, make them come in to do it, either after school or at lunch. If I planned a valuable activity or lesson, then it should be completed. After I trim down to the essentials, why let a student off easy by not having him complete it? As I read, I found my brain quickly jumping to objections, "How can that work?" "What if they don't come?" I need to put those aside, and figure out what I can do, rather than what will not work.

My criticisms are few, and I'll only share one here. Jackson does the one thing that annoys me most about listening to teachers tell stories about their classrooms and interactions in children. When relating a story of a lesson, teachers will often tell how the class objects to something the teacher says by using the teacher's name in unison. It would be like me telling you about class today, and the students said, "But Mr. Coia, how does the conflict/resolution work in movies?" It rings so false when I hear teachers recounting the events like that; students do not object in one voice! Next time you are listening to a teacher talk about his day, please listen and tell me how correct I am. I say all this because Robyn Jackson loves this storytelling feature, except with the added bonus of the kids protesting, "Dr. Jackson..." By page four, I was reminded a few times that Ms. Jackson earned a Doctorate. While mildly annoying, it did not impede my enjoyment of this book.

During the time I read this last week, I really did feel low about my teaching performance compared with the teachers outlined and highlighted in this book. But I now liken it to the way one feels after reading Paul's letter to the Romans. This Biblical book makes us feel low, sinful, and ashamed because we do not measure up to the ultimate Master Teacher, while, at the same offering a great hope because it shows a way to bridge the chasm of imperfection. The New Testament often shows our distance from God and our ability to enter into His presence. We are both saint and sinner at the same time. We see our sin and also the way to our rescue from it.

On a much smaller and less significant scale, Never Work Harder than Your Students showed me my problem and offered solutions to help me to cross that gap.
