I had to order this book for one of my Sociology classes, and I was surprisingly very interested in it! Judith Lorber is an excellent writer and sociologist, and I recommend this to anyone that is taking any higher-level sociology courses in college.

Grade 1-3--After spending the night in a dark hut together, a goat and a wolf make a date for lunch the next day. They are shocked to discover that they had spent the night with their mortal enemy but agree that they are still friends and set off for their picnic. Along the way the wolf drops his lunch and has to deal with his increasing appetite in the presence of his temptingly tasty pal. The goat narrowly escapes becoming a meal and another storm helps the wolf stay strong in his conviction to keep his friend. The long, obscure story will not hold children's attention. Double-page, crayon-and-watercolor illustrations alternate with pen-and-ink drawings on a page or two of solid color; instead of helping the story flow smoothly, they add to the feeling of awkwardness. The pictures convey a lot of movement with their messy, haphazard lines and are reminiscent of William Steig's work, though the colors are more garish. PreS-Gr. 1. These Japanese best-sellers are intriguing in terms of style and story. In Stormy Night, a goat and wolf take refuge from a storm. They can't see each other, but they form a bond, which remains when they go their separate ways while it's still dark. Much of the book's humor comes from missed opportunities to discover the other's identity. When they meet again in Sunny Day, there's no mistaking who they are: Wolf slips and says, "I've made a date with lunch." The animals struggle to subdue their natural feelings of horror (goat) and hunger (wolf) as they continue their outing. Although the books work best when read together, each one (especially Sunny Day) stands alone. Kimura allows young children to observe some real struggles involving fear, friendship, and natural instinct--and does so in a slyly humorous text that has the rhythms of another land. The loose crayon-and-paint artwork, which makes maximum use of the stormy/sunny backgrounds, encourages imagination; the text leads to discussion. Ilene Cooper

Kristine Miller, CFRE, Ministry Strategist with Horizons Stewardship, has assisted churches and nonprofits in fulfilling their visions for ministry for over fifteen years. Ms. Miller was the Director of Stewardship and Planned Giving for the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan and a Senior Vice President with a national stewardship consulting firm. Having worked with hundreds of clients across the country, Ms. Miller has become a nationally-recognized expert in the field of nonprofit organizational leadership and development. Ms. Miller is a prolific writer and frequently been a top-rated speaker at conferences and other events.

A native of Ohio, she did her undergraduate work in Business Administration at the Ohio State University and received her M.B.A. from Northern Illinois University.

Currently Senior Vice President with Horizons Stewardship, Scott McKenzie has over 15 years of experience in development, capital campaigns, vision discernment and conflict management. Prior to his time in consulting, he was a local church pastor and the Director of Stewardship for the Western Pennsylvania Conference United Methodist Church. As a national stewardship consultant, he has worked with a wide variety of denominations including United Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Episcopal, and Roman Catholic.

Dr. McKenzie believes stewardship is ultimately a question of faith development and discipleship. He teaches stewardship as "grounded in gratitude, revealed in prayer and lived in faith." He holds degrees from Messiah College and United Theological Seminary. His Ph.D. is in spiritual formation from Duquesne University. He lives in York, Pennsylvania.

Walk an entire community into a ministry of financial stewardship

Giving has never been about the money. It never will be. The problem is that people often believe it is about nothing but the money. In "Climb Higher" McKenzie and Miller combine their broad experience to provide the concrete proof.

Yes, the book is geared towards church leaders, but no mistake about it; this volume is all about how regular people can understand what real giving is all about. They simply need to read it and see themselves in one of the many examples the authors employ to demonstrate their concepts, and ask themselves, "What would I do in this circumstance?"

It is that simple. It is that powerful.

Of course, if you are a church leader, "Climb Higher" is also step-by-step guide in the basics of how to walk an entire community into a ministry of financial stewardship. Yet, the big difference between all the other books on stewardship and this one is that McKenzie and Miller begin with nuts and bolts simplicity -- a universal foundation of gratitude. Why gratitude? Because they know through their vast experience that when leaders begin to teach giving they must first get those they teach to recognize that true giving can only begin with a grateful heart for all that God provides.

Finally, to top it off, McKenzie and Miller back their bold warrants with example after example of how their process has worked over the years and then they complete the lessons with real life materials that can actually be used by church leadership.

Personally, after twenty years of working in the field of Christian Stewardship it is truely refreshing to discover this amazing book. Well done, McKenzie and Miller!

The Church and the S-Word

People may inwardly groan at the mention of the word `stewardship,' thinking it means we will be pressured to give more money. This unusual little book goes in a different direction, condensing the whole matter of stewardship to a very simple idea. The essence of that idea is gratitude, prayer and faith all defined in a way that doesn't make you feel like you are being horn-swoggled. What we find we are reading is not about the isolated concept of money but rather a basic look at discipleship which leads away from guilt driven giving to an irresistible desire to give. There's no padding, no filler in this book, and just enough illustrations upon which to memorably hang the reasonable yet radical outline. When McKenzie & Miller finish their treatise, they stop writing. What a novel idea, eh? Even if you were not trying to raise funds or set a new budget, you would find this book useful in guiding others, or yourself, into a simpler, more joyful walk with Christ.

McKenzie and Miller provided local church leaders with a very helpful resource to guide their ministry of financial stewardship. It is easy to read without being shallow. The book has an abundance of "how to" stuff as well as "why" to do it. The why explanations are grounded in the faith and experience of the writers.

This book is about making disciples for the transformation of the world. Discipleship is a matter of the heart, the mind, and the pocketbook. McKenzie and Miller keep reminding us of the holistic dimensions of faith.

As a bonus, their illustrative material is exciting. Many readers will undoubtedly use the story of the golden Buddha of Bangkok the next time they preach or do a lay minute on stewardship. It is excellent!

The Attempt at a Critique of All Revelation (1792) was the first published work of Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762-1814), the founder of the German idealist movement in philosophy. It predated the system of philosophy which Fichte developed during his years in Jena, and for that reason - and possibly also because of its religious orientation - later commentators have tended to overlook the work in their treatments of Fichte's philosophy. About the Author
Garrett Green is the Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies at Connecticut College. His previous publications include Theology, Hermeneutics and Imagination: The Crisis of Interpretation at the End of Modernity (2000) and Imagining God: Theology and the Religious Imagination (1989). He previously edited and translated Karl Barth's On Religion: The Revelation of God as the Sublimation of Religion (2006).

Allen Wood is Professor of Philosophy at Stanford University and Indiana University. His previous publications include Kantian Ethics (Cambridge, 2008), Unsettling Obligations: Essays on Reason, Reality and the Ethics of Belief (2002) and Hegel's Ethical Thought (Cambridge University Press, 1990).

I really enjoyed this book because it really did remind me of Kant. However Fichte sucessfully tackled the topic of divine revelation by using Kant's moral philosophy including Fichte's own form of egoism (not to be confused with narcissism or psychological egoism). Fichte believes that we cannot prove the empirical validity of divine revelations (since such revelations is in the realm of noumena) but instead of confirming the validity of them Fichte proposes that we decide which divine revelations are acceptable as divine revelations on the basis of morality (in the Kantian sense). Strangely, Fichte did not believe that people have to depend on divine revelations to be moral but people who do depend on narratives or stories to guide their moral compass should be receptive to divine revelations. The problem I find with this general argument is that it seems to be missing the point of what the bible means to Christians in general; while I do agree that many Christians depend on the bible for moral guidance, those very same Christians depend on the bible for other reasons such as spiritual growth and intimate communication with God (I personally find these reasons to be dubious but I am merely stating how Christians generally see their bible). Fichte seems to be using the Kantian version of Occam's Razor to take out a lot of narratives that appear immoral, but the problem is that by doing this it seems too similar with what Thomas Jefferson is doing to the bible (Thomas Jefferson took everything out accept some of the sayings of Jesus). Not that I am personally against what Fichte is implying but the consequence of applying such measures seems to be counter-productive because it backfires what was originally intended. If not much of the bible (which Fichte presumes to be a form of divine revelation) is left due to Fichte-Kant's Razor, then it only seems to show that divine revelation does not say very much about morality but actually very little. Nonetheless I enjoyed this book for other reasons.

Difficult Text for the Specialized Reader

The philosophy of German idealism, represented by figures such as Kant, Fichte, and Hegel, is notoriously difficult, and this text is no exception. It is a philosophical (or theological) work written for other philosophers (or theologians). This is not a text for the general reader. Even I found large segments of the text to be little more than word salad, replete with grandiose prose. Accordingly, this is a book that requires careful and close reading, with considerable thought given to teasing out the meaning and consequences of its passages -- passage by passage.

Nevertheless, it is an important book in the canon of German idealism, and Cambridge University Press is to be praised for bringing this (and many other) obscure texts to light, keeping them in print so that they may be available to contemporary readers and scholars.

The title was deliberately chosen because Fichte submitted this work to the author of the similarly dense Critique of Pure Reason and Critique of Judgement, and Kant responded favorably to Fichte's text to the point that he helped him get the book published, Fichte's first. This should be no surprise because Fichte tried so mightily to emulate Kant's own approach in his Critiques, but as applied to religion and religious experience.

I really needed a secondary work to help me fully appreciate this text: throughout most of the text I was under the impression that Fichte was seeking to expand the a priori categories enunciated by Kant such as space and time, cause and effect. The earlier sections gave me the impression that Fichte was claiming that acceptance of a code of moral law and the provider of that moral law -- God -- were a priori concepts on the order of the ones identified by Kant. In one of the final chapters, however, Fichte stated outright that this was not the case: "[N]o assumption whatsoever of the reality of this concept in general takes place." Religion and revelation still have their place, but it does not emanate from a priori sources.

Although I'm tempted to give this text only two stars because of the excessive difficulty I had when reading it, I am giving it three instead because I'm sure I would have gotten more out of this text if I had read it in the context of a philosophy class or if I had the benefit of secondary explanatory works. While Fichte is an important thinker in the school of German idealism (some identify him as the founder of German idealism rather than Kant), his writings are sufficiently obscure that most readers would need some degree of assistance in order to fully appreciate the text. A list of suggested readings follows the introduction, and perhaps after reading some of these I may want to add a star or two to this work.

This was an interesting personal view of Fichte's view on life

I bought this for my son who is a college student studying for his Master's in Philosophy. I peeked inside to see what Fichte had to say and enjoyed the excellent introduction about him. I read only parts of the book before giving it to my son, so I am really not qualified for a very informative review. But I have to say from what little I read, it seems that Fichte's contemporaries took issue with Fichte's personality as well as his views. He was a student of Kant and was continually compared to him but really had his own ideas. I sympathized with Fichte as he had a rather tortured existence brought on by his lack of tact in getting along with his fellow scholars. He defended his beliefs to the end, losing many past supporters along the way. Kant took no issue with him really and even helped him get his work published in the beginning of his career. Fichte was a German idealist and a brilliant thinker.

Poorly written and difficult to comprehend

My classmates and professor all agree that this book is horribly written and incredibly difficult for a non-expert to sift through and comprehend. The authors contradict each other continually and the specific ideas in the book are not well explained. I cannot imagine that there is not another text out there on the subject that is more well-written.

Dont buy it!

To add the chorus of negative views on this very bad textbook would probably be redundant, but I advise other readers not to buy it even if it's required for a class. It is a completely obfuscating and redundant text. You'd actually be better off not reading it and getting the information somewhere else where you can achieve an understanding of the subject matter, because you won't get it here. This book seems to be made with two ideas in mind: a) make it as long as possible, so it can be as thick and expensive as possible and b) make simple concepts difficult to understand thereby forcing students to buy it to understand it. So Don't be fooled!

I don't understand why any professor in their right mind would select such a terrible book for their students. I do not agree with the reviewer who said its easy enough for the college level. If I could give it a negative score I would. The terminology is extremely technical and math focused.

About the Author
Thomas Gilovich is Professor of Psychology and Co-Director of the Center for Behavioral Economics and Decision Research at Cornell University. He has taught social psychology for 33 years and is the recipient of the Russell Distinguished Teaching Award at Cornell. His research focuses on how people evaluate the evidence of their everyday experience to make judgments, form beliefs, and decide on courses of action. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the American Psychological Society, the American Psychological Association, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, and the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry.

Dacher Keltner is Professor of Psychology and the Director of the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley. He has taught social psychology for the past 21 years and is the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award for Letters and Sciences. His research focuses on the prosocial emotions (such as love, sympathy, and gratitude), morality, and power. Other awards include the Western Psychological Association’s award for outstanding contribution to research, the Positive Psychology Prize for excellence in research, and the Distinguished Mentoring Award at UC Berkeley. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. In 2008, the Utne Reader listed Dacher as one of the 50 visionaries changing the world.

Serena Chen is Professor of Psychology and the Marian E. and Daniel E. Koshland, Jr. Distinguished Chair for Innovative Teaching and Research at the University of California, Berkeley. She has taught social psychology for the past 18 years and is the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award from Berkeley’s Social Science Division. Her research focuses on the impact of close relationships on the self and identity, and on the intrapersonal and interpersonal consequences of social power. She is a fellow of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology and is the recipient of the Early Career Award from the International Society for Self and Identity. The American Psychological Society also identified her as a Rising Star.

Richard E. Nisbett is Theodore M. Newcomb Distinguished University Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan and Research Professor at Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. He has taught courses in social psychology, cultural psychology, cognitive psychology, and evolutionary psychology. His research focuses on how people from different cultures think, perceive, feel, and act in different ways. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award of the American Psychological Association and the William James Fellow Award of the American Psychological Society and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Dear god is this book dry. If you looking at this for an online course you might as well buy some booze to help get you through the chapters. The book is well put together with relevant information but its dry and an unpleasant read. Buy if you must, book was rented and came in new condition.
