A fine and hilarious introduction to Descartes' philosophy

René Descartes dies and goes to Purgatory. Socrates meets him there and interrogates him about his rationalist philosophy. For good measure, Blaise Pascal makes a cameo appearance at the end of the dialogue.

That is the hilarious setup for Peter Kreeft's excellent introduction to Descartes' Discourse on Method, which introductory philosophy students and interested laypeople can read for both fun and profit. Kreeft uses a similar setup for his introduction to other philosophers including Plato, Niccolo Machiavelli, David Hume, Immanuel Kant, Karl Marx, and Jean-Paul Sartre.

Descartes is the father of modern philosophy, which is characterized by a "subjective turn" from metaphysics to epistemology. He wrote in the aftermath of the Thirty Years War, a conflict that caused many to doubt the peace-making ability of religion and to seek that peace-making ability through rational inquiry divorced from religious authority. For Descartes that rational inquiry involved the application of a rationalistic method to philosophical investigation. The method began by doubting everything until an indubitable foundation of clear and distinct ideas was laid. For Descartes, the first such clear and distinct idea is cogito ergo sum, "I think, therefore I am."

From the indubitability of the knowing subject, Descartes went on to make a rational case for the existence of the mind distinct from the body, the existence of God, and the existence of the material world. Unfortunately, the cogito--at least the implications of the cogito--bequeathed to subsequent philosophy an unsolvable mind-body problem that has convinced many that Descartes' anthropology is fundamentally wrong. Moreover, far from settling debates, Descartes' rational method engendered only new debates.

The dialogue Kreeft crafts between Socrates and Descartes fairly lays out Descartes' the historical context and substance of Descartes' philosophy, acknowledges what it got right, demonstrates what it got wrong, and leaves open a number of debatable issues for the reader to decide on his or her own. Reading Kreeft on Descartes motivated me to go back and re-read Descartes, whom I first read as an undergraduate philosophy major. For me, an introduction that so motivates its readers has succeeded admirably.

Socrates Duals Descartes

One time, a young student of Socrates asked the revered sage how one becomes wise. Socrates brought the pupil to a nearby pond and the two went in the water. Then, without warning, Socrates held the student's head under the water as the frenzied young man fought wildly. Finally, Socrates freed him. The young man struggled for breath, panted, and gulped. Socrates watched coolly and said, "When you desire wisdom with the same intensity that you desired to breathe, then nothing will impede you from getting it." And in this fifth volume in the series of philosophical volumes by Peter Kreeft, the author employs Socrates to cross-examine an assortment of notable philosophers and thinkers (including Christ, Kant, Marx, Sarte, Machiavelli, and Plato) to assist the reader in gaining wisdom.

In this erudite yet accessible volume, Kreeft believes that Socrates and his interviewee Descartes are conceivably two of most significant philosophers in history inasmuch as they made a lasting impact on all the great philosophers who followed them: the ancient Greek and the one who helped birth modern philosophy.
Descartes famously said:"I think therefore I am." Nevertheless he also opined that "Everything is self-evident." Thus Socrates has many places to initiate his Socratic method in his dialogue with Descartes.

This fascinating and readable volume is reflective, insightful, and produces contemplation and enjoyment. "Socrates Meets" is a good text to help stimulate an interest in epistemology as well as general philosophy.

This book is a great read

This is written in a dialog format between Descartes and Socrates. It is a great introduction to Discourse on Method. Kreeft makes it easy for those of us who don't have much of a background in philosophy to understand what Descartes was teaching and the errors it contained. I can't wait to read Kreeft's other books in this series!

Grade 7-10-Justin-an "average" kid-serves as the interface between readers (and to some extent his schoolmates) and Michael Martin, aka Buddha Boy, whose Buddhist teacher named him Jinsen, "fountain of God." Justin mostly wants to pass through high school unnoticed (beneath the notice of the school's "royalty"), doing his work and enjoying his friends. He is fortunate to have supportive, albeit divorced, parents-another facet of the novel that sets it apart in a field full of useless adults. But Justin is stirred out of his camouflage by the animosity that the new kid incites, quite unintentionally, simply by being different. Both irritated and intrigued by Jinsen's apparent imperturbability to his tormentors, Justin is also astonished by Jinsen's artistic abilities. Koja flawlessly walks a tightrope in her presentation of Jinsen-devout without being sanctimonious, insufferable, or simply unbelievable-and solidly nails the small-minded, fearful, and even paranoid mind-set that dominates the high school milieu. Like Chris Crutcher and Chris Lynch, the author is deeply concerned with the psychological motivations for behavior and the belief that explicable causes generally underlie what may seem to be inexplicable actions. At the heart of her story is a deeply religious character who is neither naive nor clownish, neither self-righteous nor pitiful. Buddha Boy has a whole lot of action compressed into a short time span, but Koja admirably refuses to yield to melodramatic writing or black-and-white solutions. Quickly paced, inviting, and eye-opening, this is a marvelous addition to YA literature.

Gr. 6-10. No one in the rich, suburban high school likes the weird new kid who looks like a Buddhist monk and begs at lunch. But Justin is drawn to the stranger and defends him against vicious school bullies. Koja's short novel is openly preachy, and the packed plot is absurdly contrived: the saintly outsider turns out to be an amazingly gifted artist who was once a delinquent as violent as the school bullies--until his parents died and he went catatonic and a Buddhist art teacher showed him how to find truth and beauty in art and religion . . . It's the simple writing, along with Justin's informal first-person narrative, that will draw readers to the crucial ethical issues, especially "the social-status in-out thing" among the kids, and the way school authorities accept it. Then there's the elemental question of how hard it is to do the right thing, and to keep on doing it. "We're all gods inside, right? Karma, right?" Teens will find much to talk about here. Buddha Boy review

Buddha Boy by Kathe Koja is a realistic fiction story of a religious young boy named Jinsen, who is new at Rucher High School. The kids make fun of him for his dragon t-shirts and peaceful ways. Especially McManus, a popular hot-shot that likes to put others down. McManus does things like shoving Jinsen into lockers and jamming Jinsens locker. Justin, another student at Rucher High became friends with Jinsen despite the names other people were calling him. Justin's father is an artist and does not visit Justin very often. Jinsen just happens to be the best artist in the school. This draws Justin to Jinsen. Can Jinsen overcome what other people think and sketch his way to the top? You will have to find out yourself.

I would have to give this book a 4.5 out of 5 star rating. I enjoyed this book so much because of the simple writing style that was easy to follow yet effective to tell the story. This author really puts you in the shoes of Justin who is becoming friends with Jinsen. One thing that I didn't like about this book is the fact that it was a mere 117 pages which really turned me off when I saw this book. I really wish I could have kept on reading this book. I believe that you will love the story of Justin and Jinsen, 2 boys trying to make their way at Rucher High School.

Koja makes the Best of the Year list. Again.

I got to the point about eight years ago where I finally gave in to the temptation to predict an author. After the back-to-back triumphs that were Skin and Strange Angels, I figured that from here on out, anything Kathe Koja would release would be brilliant, and every book she released would find its way onto my top ten for whatever year in which I read it.
Then she started writing kidlit. I approached Straydog with some trepidation, but it not only made last year's best-of list, it topped it. So I had no such qualms hunting down her second piece of young adult fiction, Buddha Boy. Needless to say, I wasn't surprised, at least not by the quality.
Justin is an Everyman in an Everyman's high school; if you went to high school in America, you'll probably recognize all the archetypes to be found here. The school gets a new student, Jinsen. To call Jinsen, an aspiring Zen monk, different would be the understatement of the year. And we all know what happens to different kids in high school.
Justin, however, assigned to a class project with Jinsen, discovers that Jinsen is one of the finest artists Justin has ever come across, and thus grudgingly befriends the kid the others at school call Buddha Boy. From all this springs this small, delicate tale.
Koja's writing is, as usual, short and to the point. Even the slowest reader will probably get through Buddha Boy in no more than a couple of days. Most people will be able to find someone here to identify with (though many won't like what they see in the book's looking-glass), and the story is compelling enough to draw the reader through, perhaps in a single gulp. Nothing surprising there.
What is surprising, perhaps, is the language she chooses. It seems, especially in comparison with Straydog, that Koja's language is slipping back towards that she used in her adult novels. Not that she talked down to the audience in Straydog or that she elevates them here; it's a slight difference in tone, a barren quality from Skin and Strange Angels that was (despite the painfulness of Straydog's subject matter) absent from the previous book.
She's got a new one coming out any day now, The Blue Mirror. I can't wait. **** ½

The author of several post-Regency-era romances, Alexander (Her Highness, My Wife, etc.) once again delivers snappy dialogue and droll situations but fails to lay a solid foundation in her latest. One morning Gwendolyn Townsend receives three surprises: she learns that her father did not leave her penniless upon his death, as she had thought; that she has three orphaned nieces who need her support; and that her father arranged her marriage to his friend's son, Marcus, the Earl of Pennington. Marcus is equally astonished to learn that if he doesn't marry Gwen, he will lose his fortune. What begins as a marriage of convenience soon blooms into a love match, and life seems perfect-except that Gwen, afraid that Marcus thinks girls are useless (as her father did), still hasn't told him about the existence of her nieces. Instead of allowing Gwen to grow by confessing her secret and, later, by trusting her husband when another crisis occurs, Alexander ends her tale with a heroine who chooses the wrong path and seems likely to continue doing so. Ironically, the epigraphs that begin each chapter focus on the foibles of men, but Marcus is indeed a proper husband, demonstrating loyalty, trust and understanding. Gwen, however, falls short as a wife and as the heroine of this middling tale.

Warm, witty and delightful

Love With the Proper Husband is warm, witty and delightful. It is fast-paced, unfailingly entertaining and full of thoroughly lovable characters.
Penniless Miss Gwendolyn Townsend is called back to England from the post she loathes as a governess in America. She is thrilled to find out that she has a small legacy and that she will have a fortune if she does just one thing. Unfortunately, the one thing turns out to be to marry Marcus Holcroft, Earl of Pennington, a man she considers insufferably arrogant. Besides, she has no desire to marry anyone now that she finally has the means to be independent.

Marcus is incredulous to find out soon before he turns thirty that his deceased father left a will saying that, failing to find a different bride earlier, Marcus must marry Gwen before he is thirty or lose his whole fortune. (Something else is afoot, of course, in this situation that the reader knows but the characters don't.) After repeatedly refusing Marcus, Gwen abruptly agrees to marry him-but only because she develops a secret life for which she must have money.

It is hilarious, romantic and just plain fun watching Marcus and Gwen's growing relationship. And it is beautiful how warm and caring their relationship eventually becomes. Marcus' knack for lightening any situation and his easy forgiveness of Gwen's faults is endearing. Their wedding night is a hoot-funny, unexpected yet utterly passionate and romantic.

The other characters are equally lovable and endearing-especially the three nieces and the two Madames are wonderful, as is Marcus' mother. She puts on quite a show for Marcus early in the novel-I wish we could have seen even more of her.

The only weakness I noticed was that the last plot twist concerning the nieces is not really believable. Despite this, Love With the Proper Husband is a genuinely fun and absorbing novel that should not be missed!

Delightful and Witty

The very formidable matriarchs of the ton in 1820 regency England had formed a society to preserve the British nobility etc., which was in fact a group of concerned mama's who wanted their errant sons and heirs to get off their duff's, marry suitable girls and produce the next heirs. Through some very adept maneuvers, the very first casualty was to be Marcus Holcroft, the Earl of Pennington.
Miss Gwendolyn Townsend, having been born female, had, at the demise of her father, lost her home and all she held dear to a distant male cousin. Having been told this news by an overzealous young attorney she had departed immediately to make her way as a governess - a position she was not very good at. Once she had been tracked down and recalled to England by her fathers solicitors, she was apprised of several things, 1) she had been left a modest inheritance, 2) a small but lovely house, and 3) an arranged husband - should she so desire - the husband that is. Marcus had found out that same day that his father had arranged for him to marry his dear old friends daughter, Gwendolyn, and should he not be married by the time he reached the age of 30 - in less than 3 months - he would lose his entire fortune!
This was such an amusing story with some very funny dialog that I virtually flew through the book - it was that hard to put down! The by-play between the two central characters was delightful and the numerous secondary characters was brilliantly done as I especially loved Marcus' friend Reggie and his very droll sense of humor at Marcus' expense. The three orphaned nieces of Gwendolyn were priceless as `out of the mouths of babes' comments went right to the heart of the matter in so many instances. This was a lovely, and very enjoyable book that I can and do heartily recommend.

Sweet, Sensual & Delightful!

I loved this book. It was pure fun to read.
I've read hundreds of romances and this book was so nice. It was a real "feel good" story. I hope Victoria Alexander writes many more. It made me happy instead of aggravated like some authors do, yet it was suspenseful and hard to put down. If you like Julia Quinn, you will like this one.

Two books

This is really two books. The first part does set up the second, but it’s so much more well done that it could very well have stood on its own.

So, what’s the first part cover? It’s pretty wide-ranging. There’s brain science, neuro-economics, evolutionary psychology and biology … And all of it explains, bit by bit, why people consume. The overall idea is that consumption is, not only status signaling, but also signaling that one is in a particular group.

That last part is particularly important, as it brings in the idea of the rebel impulse. The authors see this as an example of evolutionary divergence. In other words, evolution is not all about the survival of the fittest. Sometimes, organisms evolve, not to outcompete other organisms, but to find their own niche (e.g., Darwin’s many finches and their widely divergent beaks).

The second part? It pretty much abandons all that and takes a much more historical focus. It basically starts with the Beats as examples of the rebel impulse, moves through the ‘60s, and ends up with Millennials. In fact, the last section of the book is basically cheerleading for the Millenial generation.

If the book had stopped about two-thirds of the way through, I would definitely have given it 5 stars. As is, though, this weird combination of themes will have to garner a 4.

Never seems to get to the point

If you read this book (and I don't recommend it), do yourself a favor and skip to the last two chapters. That's where the authors finally discuss in any depth the notion of how that intangible quality of coolness drives economic choices. Even then, it's not particularly clear what their driving at. Suspicious of classical, rationalist economics, I enjoy the insights of behavioral economists. Rather than telling us how people ought to make economic choices, they focus on how we actually do, pointing out how irrational and unconscious forces often guide our decision making far more than most are comfortable admitting. But this book, steeped in evolutionary biology and the study of chimpanzee society, seems to posit that we don't really have any choices at all. We are prisoners of biologically predestined patterns of behavior that it's senseless to fight against; it's just hard coded into our DNA. So, skip all that and jump to the last two chapters that explore the rise of cool, primarily focusing on the Beats, Norman Mailer, and James Dean. Their influence on culture, and the rise of rebel cool and the subsequent commodification of cool is far more interesting. I would also recommend the Frontline episode The Merchants of Cool.

An Intriguing Examination of Our Propensity for Conspicuous Consumption

Earlier this summer, a young friend of mine, who was working at the Wall Street Journal, gave me a copy of "Cool." I was intrigued by the subtitle: "How The Brian's Hidden Quest for Cool Drives Our Economy and Shapes Our World." Authors Steven Quartz and Anette Asp draw from deep wells of research and analysis to make the case that our propensity for conspicuous consumption is not just a response to aggressive marketing and advertising, but has evolved over many centuries of human development. The authors draws from disciplines as varied as economics, psychology, anthropology, sociology and cognitive neuroscience.

I was skeptical about the premise of the book, but the research is so thoroughly annotated and analyzed that I was compelled to think differently about the impulses that drive us to spend our money in ways that do not always make rational sense. The implications of the findings of this book apply equally well to the realms of marketing, advertising, retailing and e-commerce.

If you would like to understand why you often find yourself compelled to purchase goods because they will make you feel and look "cool," then this book is for you. It is chock full of examples of how we as consumers have evolved to the point where we often purchase items for reasons that go far beyond their practical utility. This book is a welcome additional to the growing field of behavioral economics.

Nice arrangements for beginning church performers

I purchased this book for my 8 year old granddaughter who loves to perform in church. I have been teaching her for 2 years, and this book is a good difficulty level for her. I agree with the previous reviewer who said the hand positioning is not standard, and there is some changing of positions, but so far, my granddaughter has been able to adjust to them.

If you are looking for a higher level book of the same nature, Phillip Keveren's book entitled "Shout to the Lord" has some of the same songs as this book, but it is of the late intermediate/early advanced difficulty level. I have that book also, and I enjoy it very much, and have used it in church services several times.

Nice Selection for Federation Contest

Though the hand positions are not basic, and do involve some changing of positions, my students are very happy with this book for Federation Contest Hymn Playing for Primary Class B and C. The songs are all Christian Praise songs that they know and enjoy playing. In addition to Awesome God, Lord, I Lift Your Name on High and Shout to the Lord are all popular with students.
