A bunch poorly written research papers

I am technical, and bought this book more or less on a whim. I looked at the table of contents, which at least seemed interesting. However, once I got the book it quickly became clear that it's generally a set of research papers which aren't really even stitched together, stuck between two over-priced hard covers.

To make matters worse, although there are a few pages (pages- I mean that literally) that have some value, and where I learned something at a high level, most of the papers in the book are fluffy and without detail or substance.

My recommendation is that if you are technical you should stay far away from this book. You will need something more detailed and grounded. If you are not technical, you will need something more simple and well written. In short, it's a ripoff.

Be Careful

Be careful: this book is a compilation of research papers that are not always related to each other. I've read the chapters related to my research and I could find some good pieces of information in some chapters, but in general they didn't help me that much.

If there is something really negative about this book is the Chapter 2... It is almost unreadable. I cannot believe that this paper was published anywhere...

Very good.

This book has not only information about the mathematics in the linear regression analysis (LR), but also a lot of information on best practices, much of what was an eyeopener to me. In this regard, IMO, the best parts of the book are the sections dealing with:

* Qualitative variates in a regression.- The best is the use of "indicators" and not "allocated codes". I'd have used allocated codes as far as my intuition goes. This book explains well why indicators are the best choice.
* Multicollinearity.- How to detect it and deal with it. What are the implications of having strong correlation between predictors.
* LR in time series data.- Correlation in the errors often appears when applying LR to time series data. The author explains this is mainly due to a predictor missing in the model -adding that predictor would solve it. When not possible -and believe me, many times it's not possible, you have to incorporate the correlation structure in the model. In my experience, correlations in time series data are just ubiquitous, they even appear depending on such a things as the sampling rate of your instruments! So, this chapter was the most useful for me.

There are also other topics covered that I've already seen in other books, including variable selection, variance stabilization, evaluation of the model, etc.

The flaw: In the chapter of Polynomial regression, when the author talk about the possibility of using orthogonal polynomials, there is no sound theory on the construction of orthogonal polynomials, and the reader is referred to Seber's Linear Regression Analysis. Seber's book has the info (Chebyshev polynomials, and so on) yet it feels quite a dry read to me. So, the fact you have to go to other book to apply some technique described in Montgomery's book is not good, this is the reason for 4/5 stars. I still prefer Montgomery's book.

Wiley needs a proofreader fantastically

This was used as the textbook in a course in Linear Regression
Analysis that I recently attended as an auditor. I'm a mathematician,
not a statistician, so much of the material, and the authors' ways of
looking at it, were not familiar to me. My statistician colleagues
assure me that the techniques in the book are correct, useful, and
mostly up to date. And I believe them.

Alas, the book is poorly edited, and in just the few chapters we
covered, I found a score of errors, including misstated formulas,
misplaced graphics, multiplication where there should be division, and
even some numerical errors. If you, as an instructor, decide to adopt
this book for your course, be prepared to do a lot of proofreading
(the publisher apparently didn't bother) and to distribute textbook
corrections to your students. Also note that this book, like so many
Wiley textbooks, is overpriced.

Essential for anyone considering cross-cultural ministry

Mission Smart has had a profound impact in helping me shape my approach towards cross-cultural ministry. This book does a phenomenal job in "bridging the gap" between calling and candidacy. For anyone concerned with whether or not to go into vocational overseas ministry, this is a must read in that it prepares you by helping you ask the right questions. I highly recommend it.

Gold mine

I wish I had had this book in hand at the beginning of 24 years on the mission field. Unless you are very fortunate to have a sensible experienced missionary help you navigate the pitfalls, you are in for a lot of UNNECESSARY trouble and heartache. If you haven't got such a mentor, then let David help you at least ask the questions you never thought of. All the answers may not be relevant to your situation, but don't decide that until you have prayerfully thought through your answers and the input of others. I had the blessing of counting David as a colleague on the field. He is not only a true friend and brother, but also someone whom the Lord has blessed with much wisdom. May the Lord use this little book in a big way in your life.

This book is a fantastic resource both for the church, as well as the candidate. It walks you through some critical questions that need to be considered before pursing the missions field. It is a great resource that should be on the shelf of anyone who consults with people considering missions.

About the Author
Jim Stewart has been sailing for over 30 years. He and his wife, Jane, retired early to move aboard their boat and start their cruising life. Grandchildren who live in the Midwest have kept them on the Great Lakes. They have been cruising the Great Lakes since 1998 on their 38 ft sail boat. The wilderness of the Ontario shore, Lake Superior, and the scenic beauty of the North Channel, Lake Huron, top their list of favorite cruising grounds. Cruising the Lakes, plus their charter adventures, keeps them on the water most of the year.

Jim got his Coast Guard License in 2003 and started teaching sailing in 2004. SailTime Chicago was started in 2005 and Jim joined the Chicago SailTime base in its first year of operation as their Manager of Training Operations. SailTime Milwaukee was formed in 2009 and Jim started coordinating the ASA training program for SailTime Milwaukee (which was recognized in 2009 & 2012 as an ASA Outstanding School of the Year). ASA has awarded Jim their Outstanding Instructor Award for 2009, 2013 and again in 2014.

Excellent guide for new and experienced boat operators.

Boat Handling and Docking is a very well written guide that is understandable, has useful diagrams and clear explanations of key principles of boat handling. Each of the important principles are woven into common boat maneuvering in perhaps 20 exercises. Explanation of such critical skills as approaching the dock, docking or "pinning the boat" are covered as well as dock departure under wind conditions. There are clear directions to intervene when things do not work out as planned. Concepts such as holding in place or understanding the "safe side" of a fairway under any condition are fully explained in the book. After reading this book you are far better prepared to understand training from your instructor. As I am new to sailing I found this book an excellent knowledge base that allowed me to be prepared for skill training from my instructor. I would highly recommend this book at its small price for whole lot of information. I would imagine it would even be a good reminder for more experienced sailors as well.

This is a great book for sailing enthusiasts. An easy read and a real confidence builder. I have not seen any other books available that so comprehensively discuss docking and maneuvering a sailboat. The explanations are clear and easily understood. My wife and I liked it so much we found the author and hired him to give us a hands-on lesson.

Great Safe Boat Handling Exercises!

Captain Stewart's book is an excellent resource for learning how to handle your boat like a pro. My husband and I lived on a sailboat for over three years and I wish this book had been available when we started sailing. The excellent practice exercises build from basic to more difficult and cover docking, mooring, and general boat handling skills. The writing is clear and concise, with simple diagrams, yet it is complete enough for one to understand exactly what to do to handle a boat safely. Captain Stewart doesn't just address basic and advanced skills. He also includes what to do when things go wrong, i.e. wind changes, steering problems, engine problems, etc. And any boater knows things can and do go wrong at times. An excellent addition to your boating library.

Basin Analysis is an up-to-date overview of the essential processes of the formation and evolution of sedimentary basins, and their implications for the development of hydrocarbon resources. Since the first edition of this important and popular text, there has been an explosion of new data, new technology and new concepts in the field. This new edition takes account of these developments while retaining the successful structure and philosophy of the original text.

Basin Analysis builds an understanding of sedimentary basins by examining the principles underlying how basins function by looking at their structure, thermal and subsidence history, and stratigraphic architecture.

About the Author
Philip Allen is a sedimentary geologist with research interests in sedimentology, stratigraphy, physical Earth surface processes, and basin analysis. He has held University appointments at Cardiff, Oxford, and Trinity College, Dublin, and is currently a Professor in the Geological Institute of the Swiss Federal Polytechnic (ETH) in Zürich.

John Allen has 25 years experience as a petroleum geologist in the international oil and gas industry, initially with British Petroleum (BP) and then with BHP Billiton as an exploration advisor and Chief Geologist. He is currently a global business strategist in BHP Billiton’s Petroleum division, based in Melbourne, Australia.

Good reference text

I bought this book as a reference to refresh my mind on Basin Anaysis before returning to work. It has all the essentials if you like the mathematical approach. I found it a bit dry and the diagrams could have used a bit of colour. All in all it is was it is, a text book.

For basin analysis this is as best as it can get, i had to read about basin analysis since i will be working with basin analysis softwares, i asked around and i was adviced to get this, after reading through it i find it will writen and stright to the point.
I highly recomend people interested in basin analysis to get it.

This second collection of Adler's papers precedes the material found in the previous collection (Stella Adler on Ibsen, Strindberg and Chekov, LJ 4/15/99), ending as she begins text analysis. Here Kissel (David Merrick) has taken tapes, transcriptions, notebooks, and other sources to reconstruct an acting course in 22 lessons. What results is Adler at her strongest. Coming from a theatrical family and having studied with Stanislavsky, she became an old-fashioned autocratic teacher determined to pass on the best that she knows. She was certainly the best of her generation. The lessons are graduated from very basic matters to quite complex issues of textual analysis and decorum. Though mostly monologs, they include enough exercises and student responses to get the flavor of Adler's work. Some themes run through these classes: American culture is bankrupt, Lee Strasberg got Stanislavsky wrong, and class and its formality must be learned in order to do major plays through the realist period. When Adler died in 1992, the theater lost a great teacher, whose depth of experience alone made her invaluable. Daughter of one of the greats of Yiddish theater, Jacob Adler, she studied with Stanislavski, was a founder of the Group Theater and appeared in many of its seminal productions, married the brilliant critic Harold Clurman (they later divorced), and after the Group Theater folded, founded an acting school that rivaled Lee Strasberg's. But she never wrote a book about her theories and techniques. This collection, culled from sound recordings of her at work, at least re-creates the feel of her classes. Editor Kissel deserves great credit for shaping what could have been a chaotic collage of pronouncements into a coherent whole. The book's 22 lively chapters detail Adler's techniques for preparing her students for a life on the stage. Theater aficionados will appreciate Adler's discussion of modern plays and her belief that acting is a rare, privileged profession, and young actors will benefit from the many acting exercises sprinkled throughout the text. Best Book for Changing Your Self Image!

This book changed my life! I never write reviews but felt inspired to write one for this book. It was recommended to me by Bob Proctor and another one of his coaches. I kept asking for a way to change my self-image so that I could lose the extra 10 pounds I wanted to get rid of and they highly recommended this book.

After reading the first 5 chapters I was so amazed. The most important thing I learned was that I could use my imagination to act as my ideal self and therefore create it.

I imagine all the time being a fabulous, stylish, slender Queen as well as everything around me. I imagine wearing the stylish clothes, eating slowly and with delicate, fancy silverware on gold lined royal plates with high-quality, artfully designed foods. I sit like a Queen, I walk like a Queen, I even drive my car like a Queen. Just totally elegant, confident, beautiful and like I am so important and lucky. And it's so fun!

As silly as it sounds — it totally works! I barely have food cravings or overeat. I feel so much more confident in myself. I feel like I honor and respect myself more. And definitely a whole lot happier :)

Highly recommend this book not just for acting but if you want to change the way you think about yourself. And to change negative habits, thoughts, and self-sabotaging behavior.

Acting Life

The classic. If you want to act, get this book, read it, do the exercises, practice them and just go for it. Even if you do not wish to act on stage or screen, and you simply want to make of your life a better experience -- more valuable and enriching for yourself and others -- then read this book and do the exercises. If you want a different story for yourself, a richer life, a more profound journey on this planet, read this book and do the exercises.
This book is about life. Acting is her way of talking about a cool excellent approach to living.

Beautiful and epic, but maybe too much so at times.

The Art of Acting is a great book on the subject of acting written by one of the premier acting teachers of the 20th century. Adler's book is inspirational, powerful, and profound. She explains, in great detail, various actions the actor may be called upon to perform on stage and leads her students through various exercises meant to connect the actor with the imagination and train themselves to realistically behave within the context of their character's background, costume, environment, social status, and culture. The only reason I gave this book four stars instead of five is that I feel it is not as use-able as some other acting books. Adler sometimes goes on (and on and on) describing the nature of some kind of action ("to reminiscence") or something and...what am I supposed to DO with that? It feels a lot like her interpretation (read opinion) of the nature of those things and how they should be played. Again, it just seemed to wax philosophical more than useful from time to time. There was also the advice "the actress does not sneeze on stage" to which I wanted to shout "COME ON Stella!"...my point is, again, if you want something really practical you should take a class while reading the book so it's easier to see how to use this information, and/or pick a different book. With all that said, she makes a lot of good points and is very powerful. The dignity she brings to acting is extraordinary and her emphasis on imagination is fascinating. I recommend this book to actors, directors, and anyone interested in theatre and acting. It's a beautiful book, and I intend to re-read it eventually. Hopefully I'll find more utility in a second reading.

About the Author
George E. Rejda is a nationally known expert on private insurance and social insurance programs. He is a Past President of the American Risk and Insurance Association. His primary research areas are Social Security and unemployment insurance. He is a founding member of the National Academy of Social Insurance, initially limited to 125 experts on Social Security in the United States. He is the founding editor of "Benefits Quarterly" in the employee benefits field and also served as Communication and Notes editor for the "Journal of Risk and Insurance." He has published numerous books, articles, and other publications, several of which were used by the Insurance Institute of America in its professional program. He is a former member of the examination committee of the Insurance Institute of America, which designs and administers professional examinations to employees in the property and casualty insurance industry. His textbook, "Principles of Risk Management and Insurance," is widely used by colleges and universities throughout the United States. Rejda received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania where he studied risk and insurance as a Huebner Foundation Fellow in the Wharton School. He is a former member of the Administrative Board of the Huebner Foundation for Insurance Education at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He is also a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU). During his career at UNL, he has taught more than 13,000 students.

Excelent and very personal lesson from Grisman

Imagine that you're in a small lesson room at your local music store. You're tuning up your mandolin waiting for your teacher to come in. The door opens and your teacher for today's lesson is David Grisman! That's the feeling I get when listening to and working with these CD's. It truely feels like you're sitting down one on one with the master and he's showing you his stuff.
Sure, it's David teaching you his own tunes, but there's more to it than that. He's also teaching you the reasons why he does what he does. He teaches harmoney leads on songs like "Dawg's Bull" but he also teaches why those harmony leads work and how to write your own.
One of my favorite sections is for the song "Minor Swing" where he discusses chord substitutions. This is just good basic jazz music theory presented in a meaningful way and applied to an actual song rather than just presented as a theory.
That brings up another point. The printed music is just the basics of the songs. When David talks about chord substitutions and so on you'll need to get out your notebook and write down what he's saying on the CD because many times it's not written in the book. But that's another reason why this feels like a private lesson. You'll have to listen, take notes, and practice to get the most out of this series, just like a real lesson.
So get out your instrument, tuner, metronome, notebook, and CD player. You're about to have about 6+ hours of intense mandolin lessons. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Fairly advanced lessons, not for beginners

I am learning mandolin after playing violin for many years; I can pick out a tune pretty easily but am not familiar with chords or mandolin technique. These CDs and the book contain a wealth of knowledge, but they are pretty advanced. There are discussions of double stops, slides, and different hand positions (first, second) within the first 10 minutes or so. Also, the previous reviewer is correct that you need to take copious notes. There are a lot of quick references to things like "third finger on the 8th fret, second finger on the third fret of the fourth string," etc., which are hard to process quickly. It would be wonderful if Dave Grisman could put together some simpler lessons! I am giving this four stars because of the wealth of knowledge contained in the CDs, but I would give it three stars for someone at my skill level, and less for rank beginners.
