and those who enjoyed Fimbulwinter will certainly like this as well

This book is a worthy successor to Fimbulwinter. The tone is similar, and those who enjoyed Fimbulwinter will certainly like this as well; however, more emphasis is placed on developing the setting, wider-ranging character interactions and the overarching plot. The "smaller" feeling of Fimbulwinter nicely shades into a "larger" feeling here with the new setting of Kozalin, and the greater number of available interactions are handled nicely.

Notable among these are the Red Conclave and the other wizards. While it retains something of a power-fantasy feeling, it's quite refreshing to see Daniel interacting with others who work on something like his level. Fimbulwinter was an enjoyable introduction to Daniel, his new powers and the world; Black Coven does a good job of continuing and expanding on this, retaining the feeling while not simply repeating Fimbulwinter's approach.

The hints of future plot which occur here leave a good feeling about the direction of the remainder of the series. I much enjoyed the book, and I am, as usual, happily anticipating future installments.

A great book. There is still sex in the book ...

A great book. There is still sex in the book but not nearly as much as first book, and most of it is off screen and only mentioned. You also get to see other characters that are much more powerful than Daniel, so as far as the overpowered complaints, don't give them much attention.

There is also a lot of solid world building in this book. While the first book lacked a bit of explanation this one easily makes up for it. The only gripe I have is the inconsistency of the MC on how much he explains to others about himself and his magic. We will see his inner monologue in one chapter where he is thinking he must not let anyone know more about his limitations or how his enchantments work and then two chapters later he is telling people about his enchantments and his limitations.

Would definitely recommend.

Black Coven

Just as good as the first book. A great read, especially for people who like a certain strategically aspect of the story because in addition to much combat action Daniel spends a lot of time preparing for it through designing magical items based on modern principals and dealing with both its success and failures. The power level might be a little bit of the top for some, but considering the opponents Daniel faces and the fact that Daniel tends to get into serious trouble through logical human errors he in no way wins automatically. Some people might not like the rather unlikely relationship between Daniel and various women (which can be explained to some extent because most are not human (anymore)), and I am not entirely sure what I think of that aspect either. It is a bit women unfriendly, and while Daniel is well aware of it, he dismisses it a bit easily. It is also not really necessary for the story. Still, not a game breaker for me and I am looking forward to the third part.

Immensely pleasurable, thought provoking, intellectually enriching

I'm surprised to find myself, a lifelong lefty, recommending a book on conservatism (with both big and small Cs), but I think it broadens the liberal mind to realise that not everyone who subscribes to right-of-centre views is either stupid or evil — and Douglas, who is a classic right winger, has a luminous intellect and is scrupulously moral. Douglas is an old school patriot of a kind that has long gone out of fashion: the intellectual love child of Edmund Burke and Christopher Hitchens. His prose is refreshingly lucid and sincere and infused with a stop-fiddling-while-London-burns sense of urgency. I disagree with some of the stances he takes in the book and was quite surprised by his fervent defence of the Anglican church, its belief system and its faith-based Anglican schools, since he is an atheist. But, on some issues, I believe he is absolutely spot on: especially in chapter 3, which deals with Islamism, and in his scathing debunking of moral relativism. This is old-fashioned oratory at its best: a bracing antidote to political correctness, Orwellian doublespeak, spin and academic obscurantism. Whether or not you subscribe to his views (and I don’t always), he’s worth taking seriously. And if you love good writing, he’s an enormous pleasure to read.

Well Researched and Intellectually Satisfying.

Murray does an excellent job of demonstrating the broad foundational conceptions of the ideology by virtue of historical chronology, philosophical application, and the political implications involved. He also discusses at great length the esoteric nature of the ideology in relation to the popular misconceptions of it which are pervasive. Neoconservatism offers a dynamic, cohesive, and comprehensive vision for the future that is premised out of the realities of the modern era, and the eternal rights which were self-evident to the founding fathers of America. Unlike mainstream conservatism, neoconservatism is not fixated on the politics of nostalgia but is in contrast almost entirely focused on the future, and has a captivating, intellective, as well as convincing vision for it. Perhaps the most appealing aspect of neoconservatism is the intellectual diversity within the ideology that is only binded together by a broad set of principles that all neoconservatives agree upon.

A criticism would be that Murray only briefly touches upon the famed 'New York Intellectuals' which Irving Kristol was a part of, and never directly mentions them specifically from what I can remember. Additionally, Murray could have spent more time discussing the intellectual evolution of Kristol from his original far-left ideological predilections, which were predominant early in his life.

to see that one of the authors was an ex-New York Knick from one of the great championship
teams of my youth. I read Jerry Lucas's introduction with some curiosity and was hooked
immediately. I, too, had spent a great deal of my childhood inventing alphabetical and
numerical games. (As a result, I can still recite the phone numbers of a dozen or so elementary-school friends from thirty years ago!) I realized that I still used some of these tricks, but that there were even more ways I could use letters, numbers, and symbols to retain information. The techniques are interesting and ultimately fun. Oh, and let's not forget helpful.

Starting with a simple elaboration about the well-known image linking method of remembering lists, the authors build on with homonyms and codes that can be applied to almost anything that needs to learned.

I really enjoyed this book in several ways. The light and conversational tone forgoes the drier explanations about psychology with simple and effective details that will have you remembering things faster than you thought. While most of us have resigned ourselves to the brute force approach of repetition in remembering anything, those seeking alternative methods will be very interested in applying the techniques that the authors elaborate. In my case, the chapter on learning a second language has been an incredible guide to remembering vocabulary, moreso when it is something as alien as the Japanese language.

There is one passage that really stuck to me – In chapter 2 they were quick to declare that “virtually all learning is based on memory” and that while some educators might take offense to having their lessons simply “memorized”, the authors countered with an anecdote about the three steps of basic learning: 1) the search for information, 2) remembering the information, and 3) applying the information. By concentrating on the second step, everything else you want to know will coalesce around and finally you will be actually learning. While I seriously doubt the methods and exercises will turn you into stage act on par with Harry Lorayne, being able to remember names, faces, and the associated phone would be an impressive feat in this age of the omniscient contact lists.

Bad Memory? Buy This Very Useful Book

I first bought this book many years ago when I was first starting college. It was an incredible help -far beyond what I thought it would be. I saw Jerry Lucas on Johnny Carson one night. He had all of the people in the studio audience tell him their first and last names when they filed into the auditorium. There were about 400 people in the audience and when Jerry came on (which was about two hours later) he had everyone stand up. He pointed to them each and said their first and last name without an error. I bought the book the next day and have recommended it to many friends who have also benefited from the methods Jerry and Harry teach. It is not difficult, you just have to train your mind to use the tricks they tell you about. I still have my original paper book copy but it is a little tattered and the binding is falling apart so I bought the electronic copy. This is an exceptionally useful book that can help you in all aspects of life, whether it is remembering names, doing math in your head, or dozens of other tricks. Highly recommended as a necessary book.

About the Author
Howard Eichenbaum (Ph.D. University of Michigan) is a University Professor at Boston University, where he is also the Director of the Center for Memory and Brain and the chairman of the Department of Psychology. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in neuroscience at M.I.T, and he has held previous academic positions at Wellesley College, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. His research focuses on how memories are represented and organized in the brain to support our capacity for conscious recollection. He has published over 170 papers, reviews, and commentaries as well as two edited volumes and three monographs including Memory, Amnesia and the Hippocampal System (1993), From Conditioning to Conscious Recollection: Memory Systems of the Brain (2001), and The Cognitive Neuroscience of Memory: An Introduction (2002). He is editor-in-chief of the journal Hippocampus, and is a member of the editorial board of 10 research journals and encyclopedias.

About the Author

Robert W. Keidel is Clinical Professor of Management at the LeBow College of Business, Drexel University. He also is principal of Robert Keidel Associates, a consulting firm based in Philadelphia. A former corporate manager and Naval officer (Vietnam veteran), he was a senior fellow at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and a program consultant at the National Center for Productivity and Quality of Working Life.

Keidel’s articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Management Science, and several other academic and practitioner-oriented journals. He is the author of three previous books: Game Plans: Sports Strategies for Business (Dutton, 1985; Berkley, 1986; Beard Books, 2006); Corporate Players: Designs for Working and Winning Together (Wiley, 1988; Beard Books, 2005); and Seeing Organizational Patterns: A New Theory and Language of Organizational Design (Berrett-Koehler, 1995; Beard Books, 2005), which was nominated for the Academy of Management’s 1996 George R. Terry Book Award.

Keidel received his BA from Williams College, and his MBA and PhD (Social Systems Sciences) from Wharton.

Strategy a complex and confusing area of business for the simple reason that strategy requires answering difficult questions for which there are no clear and simple answers. Overall a good book for a student of strategy, helpful for executives who have the time to think through these issues - that should be everyone, but often its not. If you have the time to think, and the desire to think differently and you purchase the book in hard copy, then the Geometry of Strategy is worth the investment of your time and attention.

NOTE: This book is a good investment at $15 - 25 for the hard copy, similar to the e book price. When I checked the hardcopy price on amazon was over $100, a level at which I cannot recommend the book, even though I did not get as much value from reading the eBook as I would have from having it in hard copy.

Strengths

The completeness of Keidel's treatment of the issues related to strategy and organizational definition.

The examples used to illustrate the tools and the different ways of thinking.

The illustrations that make it easy for you to see how your situation could be represented in these geometries.

Challenges

The book is conceptual in nature so its about how you think about these issues rather than address specific points like technology, HR, etc. That is not bad as you need to think clearly to make good decisions, but for people looking for a recipe at the functional level will not find it here.

This is not a good e-Book. Much of the book's value rests in its illustrations on how to use the different geometry's. Because of this I would recommend purchasing the book in hardcopy rather than electronically. I purchased a Kindle version and found myself recopying the diagrams into a notebook so I could think and annotate them better.

The writing style is rather academic and heavy requiring your concentration to work though and digest. This is another reason for not purchasing this as an eBook that one tends to read/skim more than study.

The book concentrates on Keidel's ideas and points without putting them into the broader context of what the reader may already know. I get the impression hat the book assumes that there is only one way to do strategy, which limits your ability to bring the reader's experience into play.

An inspiration in managment and organizational thinking

Robert W Keidel is a brilliant thinker who deserves far more visibility than he has in the global management arena. His latest book is an inspiration and a great, much expected (for me) follow up to `Seeing organizational patterns', a source of stimulation I return to often in my work as a consultant, author and speaker. I wish we could make Keidel's work compulsory to anybody with organizational/management responsibilities. For one tenth of Keidel's ideas others have created guru empires with little new ideas but a lot of noise. Thanks Robert.

Great book.

I found this book reads fast. It's not a simple read, but it's organized well and has a number of useful concepts. Unlike some other books, I can see how the information correlates with my professional career. I was renting it, but went ahead and bought it because I might want to refer back to the information at a later date.
