Fantastic

I liked this book very much. It's not a zombie horror, but it does make you sit up and think "am I a zombie" I don't want to go into any detail because I hate "spoilers" no matter what you do, people are going to read the spoilers. But this is one book that I think anyone would like.

New take on an old theme

The Breakaway

Michelle Davidson Argyle is one of those authors who, not unlike the elusive octopus, sucks you into her stories from the get go & doesn't release you until she's finished with you. That's why I relish reading her work & look forward to beginning her books with the fervor of a child gleefully racing toward an ornamented tree at Christmas.

Let's face it - there are thousands of books out there on the subject of kidnapping - most violent & horrific. This was dealt with delicate hands; ones only Michelle could encapsulate. The Breakaway snatches your attention instantly, throwing you headlong into Naomi's dilemma & strapping you down for a most unusual ride.
I must say that Argyle's new take was a refreshing change. People get sick and tired of too much violence and it was dealt with incredibly well in this book.
Engaging & exciting from the get-go, not only was the language well-paced, but it was beautifully descriptive - right down to the art that comes when pouring a cup of coffee. That's right, I said it - art in pouring coffee.

The dialogue between the characters was moving enough to make you feel as if you are the main character. The intensity between one of the kidnappers and Naomi was exciting & dripping with such anticipation, that I hoped it wasn't just Stockholm's Syndrome.
I did not foresee the ending and it was a nice way to complete something that could have been truly devastating to Naomi. The elements from her past life and new life were tied together beautifully leaving her with a wonderful new take on who she had become. I didn't understand the title until the last paragraph. I LOVE it when authors throw in that subtle touch!

As always, it was an absolute pleasure reading Miss Michelle's work & I eagerly await her next release - Bonded. I'm sure I'll be up until all hours of the night reading that one as well!

The Breakaway

Wow. This was an intense book. It deals with some very real and some may say controversial issues. Naomi is kidnapped and the whole story centers around her and her captors and the various relationships they have. This book is masterfully done. I think Michelle Davison argyle's writing is incredible.

Naomi is very brave. I felt so bad for her throughout the whole book. She had a pretty rough life, and then of course this happens and she is basically a prisoner. The story starts off with her capture, so you don't really have a chance to know what her normal life was like. Right away, she was scared and in emergency mode, which was great. But I didn't know what she was normally like. I didn't have a baseline. But that being said, the beauty in Michelle's writing style is that she reveals all of that information throughout the vivid flashbacks. We learned about Naomi's family and her relationships all through memories and flashbacks.

Like I said before, this book is very intense. My emotions were all over the place while reading the breakaway. Her captors were their own little family, which was something Naomi felt she was lacking. I thought the breakaway was a fascinating look into the psychology of captor/captive behavior.

The relationship aspect if the book was equally as intense. Naomi was no stranger to abusive relationships. (This poor girl..- I think that was my most common thought while reading) so I think it was a little easier for me to understand why she acted the way that she did. I do have to admit that I don't think I would make the same choices she did, but then again I guess I can't really understand what she was going through. The breakaway is an intense ride, but I really liked it. It was though provoking and very rough and real.

Couldn't put it down!

Do not read if you do not want to know how the book ends!
"The word normal had never described her, even now. All she had done for the last month was sleep, eat, and read. She obeyed every order. She was their perfect puppet. Her mind was in a rut like a song stuck on repeat. She was getting so sick of it she wanted to curl up and die. Had she felt like this her entire life, or did she only notice now because the situation was more intimate?" -- The Breakaway

Naomi Jensen is kidnapped and held captive, yet her captors are likable characters and start to treat her as if she were family. How do you react to that when all you've known your whole life revolves around parents who care more about their careers than their daughter? Naomi is torn between how she should feel and react in this situation. She even falls in love with one of her captors, Jesse, but is this just a residual effect of Stockholm Syndrome? Well you must read this book to decide for yourself.

As for me, I absolutely loved this book! I couldn't put it down, but of course had to as I have a 10 month old daughter and got distracted constantly! If I had had the chance this book would have been read in one sitting. It had a way of captivating me, Michelle's writing flows and is so lyrical and descriptive that I literally felt a part of the book.

Naomi's character was one that I hated and loved all at the same time...yet I understood how she reacted to being kidnapped. She felt weak and helpless and that she wasn't a brave person at all, but really who would be in that situation? I even found myself liking her captors right down to the end of the book, and was sad when they were caught. Yet, technically I shouldn't have felt that way, who wants a kidnapper to go free? Or better yet, who wants the kidnapper and kidnappee to fall in love? I did! I wanted her to stay with them. I loved this line in the book and perfectly describes how Naomi felt once free..."Jesse was right. She was free now, but what was freedom without happiness?"

I loved that Michelle combined kidnapping, cooking, good food, classic literature, suspense, drama, and romance in this novel. At times I almost could smell the food they were cooking and eating in the book. It read more like poetry and I loved that!

A great young adult book that I would highly recommend for high school students and even adults!

Nineteen Weeks was hot and well-written. There are no bad guys, just real people having lots of kinds of sex while trying to figure out how to get through their lives as best they can. The characters grow and learn about themselves and sexual power exchanges, and then discover that there's a supportive world of interesting and kinky people out there. What seemed unspeakable becomes the subject of educational seminars and playful fun among enthusiastically-consenting adults. Boundaries that they assumed to be essential and intrinsic to their existence as a married couple fade and their horizons expand. This was a great romp with interesting characters, introducing a world of alternatives that many people have no idea exists. Highly recommended.

Hard not to cum just reading it

Spine-tingling and stimulating

For a person who is in his second year of service to his Mistress, this book rang a lot of bells and touched a lot of nerves. Amy's use of her husband and his concubine and their shared growth into this totally new life mirrored a lot of my own experiences with my Mistress. There is a strong human touch binding the characters. Not only did we get an insight into the mindset of a dominant woman but the book also helped explain how humans can breakdown prejudices and develop into more mature people through experiences they had never ever considered. There is some very strong language and behaviour described that may disturb people not familiar with this lifestyle but the humanity and -- dare I say it -- love each of the characters feel for each other rings very true.

This very happy male slut recommends it with no reservations to anyone with even a passing interest in BDSM.

Little but Impressive

The book was much smaller than I expected and not what I expected al all.
However, I'm not building the retainer wall. My husband picked it up and started to read. He agreed it was more than he wanted to know but he does keep reading it. Engineers will love this book. The average lay person, like me, finds it overwhelming. For people who really want to know about concrete and retainer walls, not just pictures, it is a powerful little book.

Good touring information

This book is full of good information for the novice trike rider. It could save a lot of grief for anyone just starting out. The only downside is that it is concerned too much with his personal beliefs about life and what we should eat.

Also when commenting on the measurement systems of other countries, please research to make sure they are accurate;(Australia went decimal in late 60's),

EXTREME EGOTISTICAL PROPOGANDA

This book is extremely egotistical propaganda and even with this in mind, he talks out of both sides of his mouth. He lambasts those who use gasoline powered vehicles (except his friends and family) but at the end of the book he rents one plus depends of others who have one. He also is against anyone who is not a vegan even though he admits to using fish byproducts several times a day plus each tuna and salmon when riding.

He claims to have all the answers to long distance bike riding and anyone who does not follow his ideas is just wrong....from the type bike to type camping gear...plus he has only gone about 900 miles twice.

All of this propaganda takes up well over 1/2 the book.

On the other hand, most of his suggestions are right on it taken for what they are worth

Extremely helpful resume writing tool

I use this book to help my students and alumni to write the most important, yet difficult, part of their resume - the experience descriptions. Writing descriptions on the resume should be more than just a job description. It should show that the job seeker took time and care to write them. The bullet descriptions should be accomplishment and project based, and start with an action verb. This book is a great tool to get you started, and give you ideas. It has descriptions from waiter to descriptions for nursing. I highly recommend this book as one of your tools for rewriting an effective resume. It has helped our Becker students and alumni write effective resumes, that helped land them jobs.

My Review:
This book had me riveted from page one and I can't even pinpoint why, but the story was so completely fascinating. I really enjoyed every minute of reading it.

The book opens with Adam...hard-rocker, Adam, on the final night of the band's tour in Chicage. He's drunk and stoned and tired of the party in the motel room so hops in a cab to go to Milwaukee....and ends up at a lakefront resort he remembers from his childhood in Illinois instead. The resort is closed now and has been the home of agoraphobic recluse, Miles, for the last ten years.

Miles is an artist who used to be Mike/Michael. It takes a long time for the full story to come out about exactly what happened to him to make him the way that he is now, but as a reader, you can tell that it was horribly traumatic. Miles is an illumination artist. He lives in one of the cabins on the property of the resort that his family owned. He hasn't left the property in ten years and is shocked to find Adam asleep on one of the outdoor lounge chairs. Because of his life now, he's completely socially awkward most the time. He doesn't understand subtle body-language cues or even sometimes the not so subtle ones. He's not normal...in the book he's described like someone who has Aspergers or Autism which seems accurate. The thing is, he was never that way before when he was Michael.

Adam realizes the changes to an extent. Michael was actually the crush that let Adam know he was gay when he was a teenager visiting the resort. That boy he knew had been outgoing and fun-loving...nothing like how Miles is now.

So you have one of the most famous lead singers in the country and a person who can't leave their property in the woods falling in love...*sigh* Throughout this book, I had no idea how the author was going to fix it so that they could work out as a couple. But *gah* I wanted it to work for them because when they are together on the property, they both are just right. But separate them, and things quickly fall apart....for both of them, not just Miles. It made for a great story.

I loved this book. The artistic aspect was gorgeous...both with Miles' illumination art and with Adam's song-writing. They both express themselves through their art and it's just gorgeous and romantic and beautiful. They also share a love of old movies that was a really nice detail in the story. There were moments in the story that were pure heartbreak and so difficult to read, but in the end I loved the story and was happy that it was one that I picked up. It left me with a smile on my face.

Good characters, but story quality petered out

I thought the characters were strong and unique. I liked the beginning of the story, but I felt that the later half was not nearly as good.
The characters are separated and I didn't think that they came back together enough for my liking. It only hinted at the happy ending and didn't really satisfy me.

A love story without romance

Let me start by saying this is a beautiful book. The storytelling is crisp and I found myself invested very quickly. The characters have enough twists to be unique and fresh - from the painter's past and his painting technique to the rocker and his struggles.

My only grief is that while it is a love story, there is little romance.

*** Possible Spoiler *** The characters spend more time apart than together. I love angst and uncertainties mixed into my romance but I prefer that the couple struggles together and grows together. Ultimately, this book felt like it was a story of two people who were forced to find their own path to come out on the other side. So really, how is this a romance?

I recommend this book as a well-crafted, wonderful read that will stay with you for days but in my opinion, it falls short of a romance.
