Edith Read (Barkowitz) Crouch, an author, glass artist and teacher, lives and works in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her family. Her undergraduate degree is in Art Education from Florida State University and she worked in corporate communications. Ms. Crouch was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and shortly after her birth, her family moved to the Panama Canal Zone, where she grew up and lived until graduating from Balboa High School. Mola Textile Art: The Molas of Panama's Kuna Women is her third book; her first book, The Mosaics of Louis Comfort Tiffany was published by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. in 2008 and her second book, Tiffany Studios' Techniques: Inspiration for Today's Artists was published by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. in 2010.

Probably like you, I am just out of a relationship and hurting. So I bought this book. It helped. There was a tie-in to another series of books (which I wonder if she gets a piece of the action)...which perhaps because I'm desperate and in pain (people feed on the lonely hearted), I bought that series...but it has already given me hope that I"m not alone and that once again in my life...this shall pass. In the meantime however, I need help. So hopefully what I purchased (The Breakup Cure) will do the job.

Awesome advice in this book!

I think this book is an awesome read for anyone really. Even if you have never been through a tough break up, this book is filled with great advice if you need it for future reference. I have been through a really hard breakup before, and I found myself doing things to cope that was more destructive than helpful. Boy, how I wish this book was around back then! I would have dodged many mistakes! I am thankful that in my situation, a break up was good to give us time away, and now we have been married for eight years, and have three beautiful children. I found that the positive things we did to help us love ourselves, and love one another unselfishly, were found in this book. It's fact that a breakup is painful and can cause you to become an emotional mess, with your emotions driving your actions instead of using logic. This book has awesome advice and the one thing I like most, is it focuses on you being healthy and happy. Even if you are perfectly happy with your girlfriend/boyfriend, or are happily married, this book is great to read because it points out a lot of things we take for granted. This book can help you learn to appreciate what you do have.

I thought this book was awesome in giving instructions on how to deal with a relationship breakup in a healthy and productive way. So many times we end relationships in a unhealthy way by either not completely separating ourselves physically and emotionally from the other person and not taking the time to completely heal from it.

This book really helps you to deal with the different phases, emotions and the necessary steps to either deal with or accept a breakup. I really enjoyed the step by step instructions for dealing with a breakup, accepting it, and healing from it so that you can move on. It makes you take a good look at your relationship and gets you to examine it before you decide whether it is healthy for you to continue in it.
I love the fact that this book keeps reminding you that you are worthy of having the relationship that you desire and deserve.
I give this book 2 thumbs up and recommend it for anyone who is going through, just getting over or contemplating a breakup.

The Mackenzie Legacy (The Athena Effect)

Okay so I am excited to be working with Derrolyn once again on an awesome book.

So the story continues to follow Cali and her boyfriend Cal. They are living in a world where people want Cali for her aura reading powers, but lets face it; when do the bad guys really get what they want? Not long after getting away from someone who wanted her powers, they run into another problem. Money. Yes they are running low and must figure out what to do about it. So Cali will use her powers that will create a way for them to get money. What is dangerous, is that Cali needs to help the people who are like her. The twins she meet while with the professor are just like her, only problem they aren't there anymore. They have been sent to someone more powerful and dangerous. One thing I loved about the the book is the love Cal and Cali have for each other and that it stayed constant through the story was lovely. For some reason the love between people doesn't stay constant in alot of books and that can be boring. I like a good lovey dovey story, but I did notice he got a bit clingy which isn't the best for a guy to do. Any way, Michael and Layla were pretty cool people to meet in the first book, now they get a bigger part of the book, where you learn and love them even more. Layla is a funny girl, instead of being worried about being taken by an evil person, she is worried about shopping. You know what, I probably would do the same thing...I love my shopping. Michael is a tricky fellow, first it wasn't easy for me to like him, then as the story went on it got easier and I enjoyed him. Though the bond with his sister is rather blah. Not seeing to much of a bond, but I guess not everyone needs some kind of bond.

As for the ending of the story is was filled with everything a reader could want! The best edge of the seat read so far this year, not if only the next book where in my hands...I guess for now I will leave this book with 5 stars!

A fast-paced, romantic, magical follow-up to The Athena Effect!

The Mackenzie Legacy picks up where it's predecessor left us. Calvin and Cali are on the run. Cali is turning eighteen soon, but in the meantime, she is in hiding from the man responsible for the death of her parents.

Calvin and Cali are enjoying their time on the run; they're in love, together, and the world is at their fingertips. Unfortunately, their money stash is dwindling. This pushes Calvin to come up with a plan to get some extra cash. Using Cali's power to see and alter people's emotions and mood, the two make a go of things in Las Vegas.

It is in Vegas that Cali learns a world-shaking revelation from a complete stranger. The Athena Effect isn't what it appears to be.

Upon her return home on her 18th birthday, Cali learns more about the past of her family. This knowledge, paired with what she learned in Vegas, spurs Cali into action. She and Calvin go on a search for the truth, and what they learn leaves everyone in shock.

What a whirlwind of a follow-up! Holy wow! I loved this book SO MUCH. My only complaint is one that comes from a personal place. I was a bit disappointed to learn that Cali was okay with marijuana being grown on her family's land. This perturbed me. I grew up around drugs and was always ashamed of it. I understand why it had to be in the story, but I wish Cali had been more bothered by it than she was.

But seriously, aside from that, I adored this book in every way!

Romance. One thing I have to applaud Derrolyn on is the fact that she didn't need to throw a love triangle into the story to create intensity and angst between our two lovebirds. Calvin and Cali do go through some rough patches in this book, and I appreciated that. It stems from Cali's conscience and Calvin's insecurities. Cali doesn't like that they are cheating people out of money and says so. Calvin just sees dollar signs and gets much too carried away. He even shows some unwarranted jealousy and a bit of clingy-ness to boot. I was a bit peeved at him for some of the book. He is afraid of being left behind; afraid to lose Cali. I think the two of them overcoming their relationship problems solidified their love all the more. Seeing the interaction between them in a different way (other than love and attraction) was an interesting element to add to the story.

"The two Cals had been thrown together by fate, united by curiosity, and forced to run by circumstance, but now they were bound together by pure true love.
And neither one of them had ever been happier."

Let's talk plot. This book brought the series to a whole new level. More action. More drama. Faster pace. In-depth character development. There were also some plot twists that I sooo did not see coming. They ultimately take the story in a new direction, and I like that. We see many of the same characters from The Athena Effect. Calvin and Cali of course. Layla and Michael play a much bigger part in this book as well. Max is an ever-present pain in the rear-end (more like sick douche bag). Jarod makes an appearance, as does his girlfriend (fiancé? Ack! My memory sucks). There are a few new characters, but I will leave that a surprise. ^-^ They are just as fantastic as the rest of 'em though. Great characterization!

As with the first book, I was very impressed with the author's ability to make you really feel and understand Cali's powers. It's a palpable phenomenon. The never-ending, colorful descriptions of what people are feeling--rosy happiness, competitive yellow, the lavender of satisfied sleepiness, pinkish hope, pea green desperation, sour green jealousy, bluish grey confusion, the midnight blue of troubled thoughts, anticipatory tangerine, violet concern, blood-red infatuation, etc. I also find it quite unique. I have yet to read about a paranormal aspect quite like this one. Bravo!

As I mentioned before, Layla and Michael play a huge role in this book. We follow them through third-person POV and we learn more about their past and present. They are now living with Max, ex-body-guard to the professor who created The Athena Effect. Max uses them to bank endless amounts of cash. They live a life of luxury, but are prisoners none the less. Michael couldn't be happier. He idolizes Max and enjoys living it up with his new money, possessions, and women. Layla, on the other hand, sees the moral repercussions of what they are doing and wants nothing more than to make an escape--so she begins to plan one. I really enjoyed reading about her feisty nature. She was brainwashed from the beginning, yet still found it within herself to try and do the right thing. She needs a bit of help from Cali, but wants to be good. Michael... I am not sure how I felt about him in the end. Even after seeing a glimpse of Max's true colors, he still chooses to do wrong by his sister and only redeems himself because he has no other choice. Maybe he will grow on me more in the next book.

Small, random detail here, but I have to mention it. The descriptive picture Anderson gives us of Cali's cottage in the woods is absolutely magical. When we finally get to go back there with her and learn the details of how she lived and how the place looks and feels... that moment is really a stand-out for me. We sort of see the place through Calvin's eyes, and as I said, it is magical. I can't even explain it, really. I don't want to copy down what's in the book. It's just... the cottage is something that sounds like it's out of a fairytale; like there should be forest sprites flitting around outside and maybe even a unicorn walking through the back yard. It's just gorgeous. She made it a place that you'd want to go and see immediately. It's rustic with a side of whimsy. I want to live there. Like now.

All in all, this follow-up was top-notch. I am very happy with it, and I am beyond excited for the next one! The story was fast-paced and easy to follow despite the fact that it's quite an intricate plot line. There are many small details one could miss and multiple stories to follow, yet they're all woven together perfectly to create a stunning, engrossing read.

Ms. Anderson is quite the impressive writer. Her stories just flow and entrance. I am a huge fan of this series as well as Marina's Tales. She just has a way with words and I appreciate that her self-published novels are grammatically sound and typo-free. I've seen books published by huge names (*cough* HarperCollins *cough*) that have more typos than Derrolyn's books. And at right around 200 pages, this is a read you'll finish quickly and then be amazed because she fit so much into such a short book without it seeming like too much.

Again I will say: Watch out for the plot twists; they're doozies! The ending was a surprise and, thankfully, not a cliffhanger. The epilogue sets up book three, but doesn't leave you with that I-want-to-scream feeling that crazy-ass cliffhangers do. I like that. I appreciate that. A LOT.

If you haven't read The Athena Effect, I urge you to do so now! It's a Young Adult/New Adult crossover, so there is some slightly adult-ish content, but nothing too graphic. I think YA readers as well as NA readers will both enjoy this series. I highly recommend it! All of Derrolyn's books are diamonds in the rough. I promise you'll love them!

Good story, Great Characters, it's something definitely different.

This book didn't wow me like the first one did. I still liked it however, I love the story build up Ms. Anderson creates, and the character's are fantastic.

Caledonia is a very strong character, she's brave while also being naive in a lot of things still. Her love for Calvin is fantastic, though there tended to be a time or two that it was a little sugar coated for my taste, but it didn't deter me from anything in the book, so it's relatively a minor thing that I just shrugged off and kept on going.

I do enjoy the encounters with Calvin's older brother Jared that always seems to be when the good parts really start to come in.

I'm definitely intrigued to see what happens in the next book, especially with the way this book had ended, it basically made me shudder at the grotesqueness of it, but at the same shudder with anticipation for the next book.

Wilford Welch's career has been devoted to understanding and taking action to address global challenges - as a U.S. diplomat in Asia, a professor of international business, the publisher of a world affairs publication and as an international business consultant. Being part of the solution

I was raised in a family that believed that if we are not part of the solution then we are part of the problem. Yet figuring out how to participate in that solution can sometimes be challenging. Tactics of Hope provides us with these needed suggestions and guideposts as well as support in understanding our gift and then where and how we can bring that gift forward into the world, becoming part of the solution. Wilford Welch reassures us that we really do matter. That as we find our passion and bring it forward, we are in very good company. It is in this context that Welch speaks to the heart of evolving communities around the world. He features stories about others who brought their unique gifts forward in support of that evolution, on a local or global level. Welch's stories of individuals making a difference are uplifting and inspiring. Each story uniquely exemplifies a potential model for governments, corporations, non-profits or individuals in how to move into a dynamically changing world, all becoming parts of the solution. Highest recommendation for all generations as it brings forward the hope so beautifully captured in it's title.

Awesome!

Awesome book on social entrepreneurship with inspiring case studies and excellent perspectives for seasoned practitioners in the field of nonprofits/social change as well as those less experienced who are interested in making a difference in the world and looking for some guidance/advice/opportunities. I used selected parts of the book for a workshop I taught at Stanford University and highly recommend "Tactics of Hope".

About the Author

Swati Y. Bhave, Visiting Consultant, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, is an internationally known pediatrician and adolescent specialist. She is Executive Director of an NGO―Association of Adolescent and Child Care in India (AACCI). She has been the President of Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP ) in 2000 and presently holds the post of coordinator in the International Pediatric Association (IPA). She is also a member of the Technical Steering Committee ( TSC) of the child and adolescent section of WHO, Geneva. She is a former Professor of Pediatrics in BJ Medical College, Pune and Associate Professor in Grant Medical College, Mumbai. She has also worked as a Senior Consultant and PG teacher at the Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences. She has many medical books to her credit specially in adolescent health and her current interest is adolescent mental health. She has also written books for the layman and participated in many shows on TV and given radio talks. She was Editor of the Asian Journal of Pediatric Practice from 1994–2008.

Sunil Saini is doing research work in the Department of Applied Psychology, GJUS&T, Hisar, Haryana, and has a lot of research experience on anger and anger related problems. He has published about 40 research papers in national and international journals and has edited a book with Dr Swati Bhave. He is currently Associate Executive Editor of the journal Indian Psychologist.

It's Really really good book. I love Rejoice. Very Positive Sprite of writing. This forced me to check upon my values, morals and my day to day activities because that’s what makes me who I am, and ultimately by the means of law of attraction, I attract just what I am. Fortunately, I wasn’t too late before making few corrections that otherwise could have huge repercussions in my career and legacy. Its awesome. I heartily recommend This book.

About the Author
Tom Toner was born in Somerset, England, in 1986. After graduating with a degree in Fine Art from Loughborough University and the FHSH in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany, he moved to Australia, teaching life drawing and working in an art gallery near Melbourne. Upon returning to England he completed his debut novel, The Promise of the Child. He lives in London.

Great writing shows immense potential; execution a little lacking

I'm honestly not quite sure what I think. I felt about this a lot like I did about Anne Leckie's ANCILLARY JUSTICE -- as if I should have loved it but somehow didn't. To be clear, I liked it better than Leckie's book by a fair margin, if only because it's more in my wheelhouse: a science-fantasy, written well and with full ambition on display.

Nonetheless, a lot in here just dragged on. From the imagery, which was compelling but oddly unclear to this reader's inner eye, to the plot itself (and I'm not really an "I-need-a-plot sort of guy"), there just wasn't a whole hell of a lot to hang onto beside the ambitious scope. The writing, while not once embarrassing -- my biggest worry picking up an sff book; my biggest worry when I go back to read my own work -- didn't really thrill me, either. There were a few supercool turns of phrase, but overall I didn't feel Toner reaching for anything.

... Again, other than scope. Toner is working the long game of the imagination, clearly, and for once I admire it. Why? Because it's not built on the soap-opera-ish drama of most epic sff works; instead, it's a real vision of a frustratingly rich (read: tantalizing, but not painted with any specificity) future. For that leap of imagination alone, it deserves four stars. If you're a reader like me, you'll be thrilled not so much by this single work, but the potential it reveals.

An extremely rich and innovative debut novel that was not what I had expected. I thought that The Promise of the Child will be a hard-SF post-human novel like Quantum Thief, but it was a space-opera with a science-fantasy flavor. I'm very much looking forward to the next volume.

Couldn't do it

I really wanted to like this book. I was so excited to read it, and started reading it immediately after I received it. However.... It was like being thrown into the middle of a stranger's conversation without knowing anything about what they're discussing. It was really confusing. There was no explanation behind the worlds, characters, species, etc until about 120 pages in, and at that point I stopped caring because it was still really vague. I tried to read further, but it just wouldn't hold my interest anymore.

In a model of accessible scholarship, Professor Atkins lays out Minnesota's achievement of statehood amidst the competing interests of indigenous natives, traders, farmers, townsmen, and politicians. There are illustrative and fascinating stories such as the family in St. Paul who managed to celebrate Christmas in 1898 with fruit that originated some 1,500 miles from their home. Professor Atkins also includes a photo essay of Minnesota communities as recorded by the cameras of local and itinerant photographers; the role of the railroads; even such culinary traditions as pan-fried walleye and walleye quesadillas. Very strongly recommended for personal, school, and community library American History collections in general, and Minnesota History shelves in particular, "Creating Minnesota" is an entertaining a read as it is informed and informative.

The Best in Minnesota History

I have read many Minnesota history books from the seminal state histories by William E. Lass and Theodore C. Blegen to works recently published for the state's sesquicentennial. But nothing can equal the incite and creativity offered by Annette Atkins in Creating Minnesota. I first discovered Atkins's work in Minnesota, Real & Imagined: Essays on the State and Its Culture where she provided an essay entitled "Facing Minnesota" and so I was very excited to read her new book on Minnesota history.

Atkins's approach is that of a seasoned historian who approaches her topic with sensitivity and intelligence. She is aware of her own limits as a historian and the ways her identification as a white, female, South Dakotan can affect her narrative. Furthermore, she does not shy away from the existential questions that any good historian must ask: Why do we study history? Who are we studying when we study history and how do we decide that they are the ones worth studying? How does our position in the narrative affect how we look at history?

But Atkins is not all academic theorizing, however valuable such theorizing may be. Her writing is readable, smart, and often funny. She plays with format in this book by telling the story of Minnesota by turns in broad strokes, with specific case studies, and in the form of a one-act play (an experiment that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't). What is most striking about her work is the humanity that comes forth when reading her stories. Glancing over the section of pictures, I am struck by the faces of the individuals who once called Minnesota home. Their stories are the ones that Atkins strives to tell in one way or another and, in my opinion, she exceeds all expectations.

Lyrical essays on the land and the people.

Annette Atkins can write the heck out of a story. Her lyrical history of Minnesota is thematic, personal, and a bit quirky. There are chapters in this book that soar, and there are chapters that touch on the mundanity of Minnesota history. I would read an essay by this author, on any topic that touches her heart or mind, in a minute. This book contains several such. My only mild critical comment is that this book would have been even better with more Annette, and a tiny bit less Minnesota, if that is even possible.
