About the Author
Adrian Schulz lives in Berlin, Germany, and has a degree in architecture from the Technical University of Berlin. Early in his studies, he became interested in architectural photography, and it became the subject of his thesis. Adrian currently works as a professional architectural photographer throughout Europe and North America.

Pictures of Buildings

Most photographers probably take photographs of buildings at one time or another but they do not think of themselves as architectural photographers. Yet most photographers would benefit from a little more knowledge of photographing structures. There are a few photographers who spend more time with structures than the average and this book is aimed at them.

After an introduction, which includes a brief history of architectural photography, Schulz examines the equipment to use, including cameras, lenses and accessories; shooting techniques with considerations like perspective, converging verticals and lens focal length; and image processing. The book is profusely illustrated with photographs, which can be quite useful if the reader can learn from the images of others, because Schulz never really tells us what makes a good architectural photograph. There are also several pages of comments by another architectural photographer, Marcus Brecht, although much of it repeats what Schulz tells us.

Schulz points out that there may be inherent conflicts between architects and photographers because the architect wants to capture what his art has done, while the photographer may want to make the image into his own art without consideration of the inherent art of the subject. The author specifies that it is important for the photographer to remember which goal is the purpose of his photograph.

In discussing things like the importance of converging verticals and perspective, the author offers useful suggestions for dealing with problems the photographer may encounter. It is clear he believes that the best lens one can use for architectural photography is a tilt-shift lens, but the reader won't learn the details of using such a lens in this book. Although he mentions the Schelmflug principal, he doesn't explain it, perhaps because he believes controlling the plane of focus is not so useful in architectural photography.

There is a brief section on indoor architectural photography, but there was little discussion of lighting such images.

I was unhappy with the section on post processing. I did not expect a complete guide to using Photoshop, but rather an explanation of those unusual Photoshop tools that have particular applicability. While he mentioned such tools, his explanations were cursory. Given that he used a couple of specific images to follow in Photoshop, it would have been useful to provide downloadable images, and tutorials that are more extensive. I was also surprised that in his discussion of HDR there was no mention of the tools included in Lightroom. I know this facility only appeared in version 6, which was only recently released, but other authors managed to get advance versions of the software and include it in their books.

Although I was less than satisfied with this book, I have to recommend it because there are so few other good books available about architectural photography.

Very good treatment of the subject

This book is not without its flaws, but it's a fantastic and scrupulously detailed treatment of the ins and outs of architectural photography. Amazon will let you see the table of contents of this book, so I won't belabor the details, but here's what I thought of the title, section-by-section:

1 -- Introduction -- a short (10 pages) treatment of the history, forms, and uses of architectural photography. A pretty good way to start off, and probably about the right length.

2 -- Camera Technology -- camera types, lenses, accessories, etc. 38 pages of generally on-target information (I have to wonder, though, how many practicing architectural photographers are still working with film).

3 -- Shooting Techniques -- composition, perspective, viewpoint, 153 pages that make up the heart of the book. A bit short on photography of interiors, but still very useful and thought-provoking material. You'll want / need to re-read this a few times to really get the most out of it.

Comments by Marcus Bredt -- an odd intermission in the middle of the book, I would have preferred interviews of a number of architectural photographers with differing perspectives (no pun intended) and approaches to the work.

4 -- Image Processing -- 68 pages long, dominated by discussions of Photoshop, the weakest part of the book. Given how quickly dated this sort of material naturally is, I think the book would be better off without it (or maybe Adrian could split the processing material out into a separate volume that could be updated more frequently).

So all in all, the book is very useful, if not perfect. I think Section 3 alone makes the book worth its price.

My favorite part of the book is the discussion of perspective

I began reading Architectural Photography because I wanted to improve my city-scapes and interior shots. I did not realize that it would be full of so much general information that applies to many aspects of photography. There is something in this book for all of us.
Schulz begins with a general discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of different types of cameras, from compact to large format. This is followed by a description of various lenses including tilt-shift and several of the accessories that are routinely used. Then he moves on to explaining the shoot.
My favorite part of the book is the discussion of perspective. He explains clearly that it depends on the position the camera is placed rather than the focal length of the lens used as is commonly mis-stated in photography articles. This then leads to how the placement of the camera effects vertical and horizontal lines in the image. He also offers advice on exposure and composition of architectural images.
The chapters on image processing are rather basic. They cover some raw adjustments but not in a comprehensive manner. He touches on some of the perspective controls and plug-ins but not to the depth that I would feel comfortable copying them. Schulz also includes some information about processing panoramas in Photoshop and HDR in Photomatix. He does not include information about doing these in Lightroom, but that capability may have been released after his deadline.
As I mentioned, I believe there is something in this book for all of us as we do our general photography. My disappointment with the book is that I don’t think it would be as helpful for someone that wanted to be a serious architectural photography. There could have been more than his three paragraphs on what makes a good architectural image. I don’t believe in rules, but that would give us a foundation to start from. He also doesn’t say much about how natural light works with time of day to show depth in the exteriors of the buildings or how to balance lighting to get the effect you want on interiors.

About the Author
Mary Kay DeGenova received her Ph.D. in 1992 from Purdue University in Child Development and Family Studies. She was an associate professor of Family Studies at Central Michigan University and the University of New Hampshire and has taught various courses on marriage and the family. Her work on this text is a direct result of her experience in the classroom and her experiences with diversity, including work as a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa and a Fulbright Scholar in Chile. In addition to her recent work on this text DeGenova has written Families in Cultural Context: Strengths and Challenges in Diversity, published by Mayfield Publishing Company. She was written numerous journal articles, presented papers at many conferences, and appeared in anthologies. She is currently working from home on numerous writing projects while caring for her two children.

Nancy Stinnett has a masters from Oklahoma State University. She has been teaching classes on marriage, parenting, and general human development at the University of Alabama since 1987. Nancy has coauthored books on marriage and family with her husband, Nick, who she has been married to for 41 years. Nick and Nancy have 2 grown sons and 4 grandchildren and live in Northport Alabama.

F. Philip Rice received his Ed.D. in Marriage and Family Relationships from Teachers College of Columbia University. He is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Maine-Orono, where he taught courses i the field of Marriage and Family for many years. His years of experience teaching courses on marriage and the Family, Human Sexuality, Contemporary Marriages, Human Development, and many others come through in this text. In addition to writing Intimate Relationships, Marriages and Familieshe has written more than twenty other texts on Marriage and Family, Stepparenting, Working Mothers, Human Sexuality, Human Development, and numerous others in related fields. His principal areas of research include Human Development, Child Development, Adolescent Development, Adult Development, and Marriage and Family Relations.

Nick Stinnett received his PHD from Florida State University and has taught in the area of family studies since 1968. He currently teaches courses on marriage and family at The University of Alabama. Nick is a nationally and internationally recognized leader and researcher in the area of family strengths. Best for a 100-level Marriage/Family course

I was required to purchase this book for a 300-level Family Psychology course. However, this text would be a better fit for a 100-level "Marriage & Family" general education course. It is mostly full of statistics from studies chosen by the authors and does not include deeper analysis. I expect that a text for a 300-level course would be much more involved.

I think this book was perfect for the class we used it in. It went in depth on many topics and had some nice review topics. I als othought the layout was great. I reccomend this for any college student who wants to pursue working with families.

Dr. Math Gets You Ready for Algebra is a compilation of actual letters from students who were having difficulties with some of the basic mathematics concepts that are used as a basis for algebra. The questions are answered in detail by math doctors from the Math Forum's "Ask Dr. Math" service. The content of the book is aimed at students in prealgebra or first-year algebra.
The book is well organized; its five sections include fundamental operations, integers, concepts of real numbers, equations with variables, and word problems and real-life situations. The question-and-answer format is excellent, and the explanations are easily read and understood. Also, Web resources for further exploration of concepts are included at the end of each section.
I shared this book with a colleague who teaches prealgebra. She was very impressed and expressed her desire to obtain this book for use in her classes. My first-year algebra students were helped by the explanations of different concepts. This book would be an excellent additional resource in a prealgebra classroom, an algebra I classroom, or for individuals who need extra assistance with basic concepts of algebra.—Janie P. The Math Forum’s Dr. Math Gets You Ready for Algebra is a very user-friendly book written with a view to help students make the leap from arithmetic to algebra. It is a well-organized collection of letters from students and answers provided to them by the Math Forum’s "Ask Dr. Math" service. The letters were written by actual students who were having difficulty understanding concepts that are a basis for Algebra. The answers were provided by trained volunteers who were drawn from a pool of college students, mathematicians and teachers in the mathematics community, and referred to collectively as "Dr. Math". The answers are insightful and presented in an elegant and simple manner that makes them accessible to any student.
The book is divided into five parts. Part I begins with interesting questions such as "What is Algebra?" and "How does one start thinking algebraically"? These are difficult questions to answer, but Dr. Math does a very good job of giving simple, to the point, and easy to understand explanations. This part also includes a discussion of variables, exponents, scientific notation, infinity, order of operations, the distributive property for polynomials, etc..
The notion of a variable is explained in different ways, including references to real life situations where the use of variables to represent numbers we do not know yet is crucial. Dr. Math explains how understanding the definition of an exponent easily leads to the various properties of exponents. "He" then illustrates the use of exponents and scientific notation to simplify the process of doing numerical calculations by hand and to express some very large or very small numbers. For instance, it is shown how 1.05120 can be calculated by hand with only 9 multiplications.
Infinity is a difficult concept for students to grasp. Dr. Math gives an interesting explanation of infinity, emphasizing that infinity is not a number. "He" then goes deeper to explain how infinite sets are categorized into countably and uncountably infinite, which I’m sure students would find interesting. Dr. Math does an excellent job of explaining that PEMDAS is merely a good convention for the order of the fundamental operations and that you can use different orders of operations and come up with a perfectly consistent mathematical system. To explain why the distributive property for polynomials works the way it does, Dr. Math neatly models multiplication of polynomials after multiplication of numbers so that it looks familiar.
In Part II, Dr. Math explains the concept of integers. A detailed account of how the fundamental operations work with integers is given. To answer the frequently asked question, "Why is a negative number times a negative number positive?", Dr. Math gives several good explanations, as there is no single visualization that works for everyone. This part ends with a discussion of absolute value, along with some practical applications of this concept.
In Part III, Dr. Math introduces students to real numbers. A simple and interesting discussion of why 0.999... = 1 and of what it means for a decimal to repeat forever is given. The concepts of prime factorization, greatest common factor and least common denominator are explained thoroughly. Dr. Math shows how one can approximate square roots by hand by repeated use of division and averages. This leads to a discussion of irrational numbers, including a brief history of π. The authors then help students visualize the relationships between the sets of whole numbers, integers, rational and irrational numbers as subsets of real numbers with the aid of Venn diagrams.
In Part IV Dr. Math explains the importance of being able to solve equations and gives highly detailed step-by-step instructions for solving linear equations. Moreover, a neat explanation of why we can subtract one equation from the other when solving a system of two equations in two unknowns is given.
Part V, the concluding part of the book, aptly discusses applications that demonstrate the uses of numbers, equations and variables. Some of the problems described here deal with ratio and proportion, area and perimeter, distance, rate and time, and rate of work. Students having trouble with distance, rate and time problems would definitely benefit from this section. Dr. Math introduces these concepts with carefully chosen examples and does a great job of explaining some tricky problems posed by students on this topic.
In conclusion, this book cannot be used as a textbook but would certainly be a very good reference for Prealgebra/Beginning Algebra students and teachers. Its unique question and answer format makes it interesting for students to read. The language is simple and explanations are clear and precise. Prealgebra students will be able to read this book by themselves. They will also be able to relate to many of the questions in the book because they are likely to have encountered similar questions during their course. Students who do not have difficulty in understanding prealgebra will also benefit from this book, as it will get them to think more deeply about the concepts and clarify some misconceptions they might have.
This book includes many great questions asked by students, questions which would require some thought on the teacher’s part to answer effectively on the spur of the moment. This makes the book a good reference for prealgebra teachers. Moreover, numerous web resources that provide practice problems, group activities, real life applications etc. have been listed at the end of each part of the book. we love Dr. Math

Since my son started using BeeStar online math, he often asks questions about math problems. They are more and more challenging to me. This book came in as a big help. Its friendly question and answer format makes it very easy to use. The answers are insightful and presented in an elegant and simple manner that makes otherwise hard-to-explain concepts easy. It not only teaches the conventional math, but also gives you the context and the thoughts behind the principles. My son's math sense is improved significantly since I used this invaluable book. We love it.

As far as I can see

I bought Ready for Algebra because we're homeschooling and I have trouble with math. I'm an older-than-usual mom and it's been 40 years since I had algebra, so I need help. Frankly, I got this book for myself. The cartoons, the simple explanations, and the blessings of an index and glossary are helping pave the way for me as I work alongside my daughter in math. Now I'll understand what she's asking and not have to call our mentor math mom all the time. :)

Dr. Math Gets You Ready for Algebra contains answers to some pithy questions.
�What is algebra?� The answer starts out: �Algebra is like arithmetic, but in algebra some of the numbers have names instead of values.�
As another example, �It makes no sense to me why someone would replace a number with a letter� signed Carissa. The answer is in part �You�re doing something a little like algebra whenever you use a pronoun. You could have written this: It makes no sense to Carissa why someone would replace a number with a letter�
Or how about: �An algebraic expression is like a word or phrase, and an equation is like a sentence.�
A successful textbook is easy to TEACH from because it has lots of exercises, and plenty of extra padding in case there isn�t quite enough useful content to fill the entire semester. Reading a successful textbook is often like eating sawdust. In contrast, Dr. Math Gets You Ready for Algebra is easy to LEARN from. It is not necessary to read it cover to cover. Instead, I heartily recommend that you keep this book in your medicine cabinet, secure in the knowledge that if your pre-teen comes home with a questions about pre-algebra, you won�t be left with a splitting headache.

Writing is a mess

I read the preview which shows most of the book (like 90%) and I seriously don't understand the praise this book gets from the "reviews" here. The writing is TERRIBLE. it's a mess to read and the ego stroking is almost unbelievable. The way he words things makes it seem that he is telling facts instead of the purely hypothetical thing that it is. If you are a HARDCORE believer, then you'll go gaga all over this. Everyone else, don't waste your time.

Not Really Breaking New Ground

Kindle Unlimited was offering the book free of charge so I went ahead and dove in. I’ll give Chris some credit in that he has an interesting viewpoint on the afterlife. Unfortunately he presents his views as fact instead of conjecture. Often times praising his own work and not realizing how arrogant that comes across. I get that you’re trying to sell yourself, but once the product is in someone’s hands pull it back a little.

All of the investigations described in the book are conducted with several crew members. However you only get Chris’ side of the story and his interpretations. It’d be interesting to get the other investigators to recount their experiences and help broaden the scope of the book.

The book also really needs an editor to fine tune it. Grammar issues plague the text and make it difficult to digest. It’s also annoying to read the author complain about how the paranormal field isn’t elevating itself when he sprinkles unnecessary referential humor into his own book (“my spidey senses are tingling!”).

Bores is clearly passionate about ghost hunting, but his own ego holds him back. If he could learn some humility and open himself up to help and differing viewpoints, he might actually be able to accomplish some feats. As it currently stands Ghost Hunting 2.0 isn’t going to rock your worldview nor is it even a coherent guidebook. In reality it’s a glance into the mind of a person trying to create relevancy in a fading field.

Frustrated ghost hunter claims to be innovative but fails to prove his point. I found most of his claims to be unsubstantiated and more representative of his opinion. Obscure references to ancient texts and even quantum physics is not compelling. People who know nothing about the activity may find it interesting.

Vishram Singh is presently Professor and Head, Department of Anatomy, and Member of the Academic Council and Core Committee PhD Course, Santosh Medical College, Santosh University, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. He is also Editor-in-Chief, Journal of the Anatomical Society of India. He holds MBBS and MS (Anatomy) degrees from King George's Medical College, Lucknow, UP. Professor Singh has been teaching anatomy to undergraduate and postgraduate students at several colleges and institutes like King George's Medical College, and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, and has been an examiner to various colleges and universities. He has more than 40 years of experience in teaching, research, and clinical practice. He is the recipient of The Best Teacher and Researcher Award from Al-Arab Medical University, Benghazi, Libya. He is an expert in anatomy and has more than 15 books to his credit and published several research articles in national and international journals.
