A trusted reference and companion for any girl or parent

The American girl books have been a trusted companion for me in transitioning my girls and step daughter in growing up in this fast paced technological world. There are so many ways for girls to be exploited and they cannot always HEAR the message from the parent. I always talk to my girls about having a place to go to get accurate information. These books are a great reference. They are easy to read and very girl friendly. They are appropriate for every tween or teen girl.

I'd recommend it for any girl who is starting to get ...

This book has been so helpful for my 8 year old daughter. I'm reading it to her so there are a few parts of the book I omitted because I didn't think they applied to her (such as boys asking girls out and vice versa). She isn't ready for that and I don't want to put ideas in her head. It has been helpful explaining how to deal with crushes. I'd recommend it for any girl who is starting to get interested in boys, but parents should definitely read it with their kids.

My 9 year old loves this book. I like it too. Age-appropriate. No discussion of anything sexy-time-ish. Just answering questions girls her age might have about crushes and butterflies and things like that. I read it first to make sure it didn't go "there" and was satisfied that it acknowledges a young girl's feelings without giving too much info she doesn't need or want. We may have skipped a chapter later in the book that seemed more high schooly in nature.

interesting as a historical document

This is an abridged reprint of the 1723 edition of Filippo Bonanni's "Gabinetto Armonico," with 152 engravings by Arnold van Westerhout. There are 7 pages of introduction with a list of engravings, 19 pages for the index and a catalog of titles by Dover publishing (presumably outdated), and 305 pages of the book itself.

This is essentially a visual catalog of musical instruments and other noisemakers of antiquity, from ancient Greece, Egypt, Rome, India, Persia, and North Africa to medieval Europe. The basic format is one page of text (about a paragraph on average) and one 4.5" x 6.5" engraving per instrument. All the original artwork is here, but nearly none of the original text. Instead, the editors have condensed the original writings into "captions" that provide basic information about the purpose, usage, history and sound of the instruments, and often, corrections to Bonanni's text.

Many different instrument types are included. Horns, strings, organs, and percussion instruments of many varieties are accompanied by a sizeable selection of non musical noise makers, such as hunting horns, bird whistles, voice amplifiers, and military and religious ceremonial instruments.

The engravings are more informative than artistic. Almost every image is a full body portrait of a player with an instrument set against a nondescript outdoor background. As much attention, if not more, is given to the player and his/her clothes as the actual instruments. None of the images are particularly frame worthy, but all are clear and reproduced very well in this printing.

There are some problems worth mentioning. One is that the editors' captions make it clear that the original work should not be read as a reliable historical document. Many entries are noted as being inaccurate, if not entirely imagined. Another problem is that Bonanni's world view was apparently as antiquated as his subject matter (not entirely unexpected for a work of the early 18th century). The captions and engravings occasionally allude to the author's fantasies of exotic, naked simpletons dancing by the fire with their crude yet amusing whirlywoos. Of the maraca, Bonanni writes that it was used by "savages who know no better instrument." I assume that overt racism played some part in Dover's decision not to use the original text or to print another edition of the book thus far. This is unfortunate, as the book has significant historical value and deserves a proper reissue.

This isn't a scientific or comprehensive work (unfortunately it lacks a bibliography). It's a historical record, albeit with the biases they often entail. There is some interesting music history here that's unlikely to be found in the average history book. This book should appeal to art, music and history aficionados, and would make a good companion piece to the Getty Museum's "Music in Art" from their excellent Guide to Imagery series.

The lack of an ingredient index makes me question why anyone needs to buy the book rather than just rely on the internet

I don't have a huge collection of cocktail books, but I have several and I thought I'd like an encyclopedic type of book. I like to start with a cocktail book's introductory sections, and this book has very good sections on bar tending basics, the bartender's kit, glassware, garnishes and key ingredients.

This is a huge collection of recipes, presented in alphabetical order by the name of the drink; i.e., not broken down into sections by type of cocktail or main ingredient. Each recipe includes a small color photograph of the drink and a short, straightforward description of its ingredients and preparation. Following that, the editors give a star rating, their one-sentence assessment under the subhead "We Say" and, in some cases, a one-sentence description of the drink's origin.

If all you're looking for is a quick reference, the book is fine. There are 3000+ recipes, so you're likely to find most drinks whose names you know. But considering that I can find any drink recipe and a lot more in an instant on the internet, I really wanted the book to offer something more; something of the magic and romance of mixology. But there is little of that here.

What's more, there is a serious and surprising negative. I would expect an encyclopedic treatment to include a thorough index, but all this has is an index by specific brands of liquor with whose proprietors the editors have partnered. That's advertising, not indexing. The text makes it clear that there is an ingredient index at the editors' online site--and there is--but that begs the question why to buy this book at all, rather than just rely on the internet.

I was also surprised to find a number of inconsistencies within the text and between the book and the website when it comes to drinks' star ratings. For example, the Young Man Cocktail is rated 4 stars in the book, but only 1 star on the website; the Amatitan Twist is rated 4 stars in the main part of the book, but 5 stars in the back, under the Luxardo Maraschino Originale heading in the featured brand index.

If you really feel the need for an encyclopedic cocktail book, I'd say this is a decent choice, with the highlight being the introductory sections and the lowlight the lack of an ingredient index. But I'm a lot more likely to stick with the DiffordsGuide website.

A great compendium of drink recipes.

So you know how there are all those drink books out there, which just have page and page of drink recipes, that only give you the name, the ingredients and amounts, and five words on how to mix them? There are a lot of those out there. And they mostly stink.

This book is like those, but does it sooo much better.

So you get 800 recipes arranged alphabetically. I have seen some complaints about this, from people who think that the recipes should be arranged by main ingredient. But if you hear about a drink, and you don't know the ingredient list, you would want to look it up by name anyways. So being listed alphabetically does not bother me.

After a nice introductory section covering all the basics, you get the recipes.

Each drink is then listed by name, and then you are told whether it is a new recipe or perhaps a key recipe.

A key recipe is a drink that can be made with a combination of the 14 key ingredients listed at the beginning of the book. Quite a nice feature if you are just starting out, and building your home bar, put together the 14 key ingredients and you can easily make a couple hundred drinks from this book.

So you get a name, and an indicator or new or key.

The you get a rating from disgusting to excellent. I haven't noticed a drink actually listed as disgusting, but perhaps there is one in here.

You given a color photo of the drink, so y ou can either see if you may want to try it, or how you may want your finished product to look.

Next, a recommended glass to serve the drink in.

A recommended garnish.

And method to use when making the drink.

Then you get the actual recipe. The recipes are listed in amounts called "shots" which means they don't use ounces or milliliters. I equate a shot to an ounce, but you could also just use a small shot glass then to make all of your drinks. Makes it easy, so you don't need a jigger or measuring cup.

Finally you get a a little review of the author's personal thoughts on the drink and a sentence or two on the drinks history if you want to impress someone.

So if you are just looking for a book with a huge amount of recipes, this is the best book out there for that. Are there better books, with more information, or maybe better organized, or even with better drinks, perhaps. The this remains the best presentation of a large group of drink recipes I have seen yet.

Great Compendium of Recipes

One complaint of prior editions of this book was the lack of an ingredient index. I purchased this book based on the over 3000 recipes and the promise of an ingredient index to help me locate recipes containing certain ingredients. I received a good-looking book with a great layout and professional photos and appearance. It certainly has the recipes, but the index is not quite as expected. There is a list of name brands at the end of the book, and for each product there is a list of recipes in which they are used. All recipes are not indexed. At the end of the book is a page advising the reader that recipes may be searched by ingredient at the author's website. The list of the world's best cocktail bars is missing.

The usual introductory information about the tools of the trade, techniques, and garnishes is also included.

If you're looking for a great-looking encyclopedia of recipes, you probably won't be able to beat this book. I recommend it.

good but needs improvement

This book is very useful in highlighting some of the facts which were overlooked during the nuclear board review course. I encountered many questions from the book during the board exam. I used the kindle version of the book. There are two disadvantages I would like to point out. 1) Choices for multiple choice questions are assigned numbers such as 1,2,3, and 4. But answers are given in letters A, B,C or D. It is not a major issue 2) Answers are given at the end of the chapter. It is quite frustrating to go back and forth between the questions and answers in the kindle. I request authors to pay attention to this and place the answers next to the individual question. I was able to overcome this situation by using two devices at the same time.

Great questions with explanations...more than just image interpretation.

Although this a question book, the explanations are very detailed and can be used as a primary text. I am radiology trained and therefore found the book more skewed towards a cardiologists perspective (which I liked). The book is VERY heavy on techniques, indications, and pharmacology regarding performing stress tests.
